What a year of dancing at a team performance level with an award-winning instructor taught me, and what does it have to do with work? Everything! An ex-colleague used to say, When you play team sports, you start to understand what it means to be in a team. In my case, the team sport was street latin dance in a performance team, and it helped me tremendously to make 2024 a more manageable year. Here’s my key takeaways: 1. Leave no one behind and you lift each other up, even when you come from different backgrounds 2. Ask for help when you need it - Else, who’d know you need help? I managed to nail challenging moves with top tips and creative break down of the moves from my teammates 3. To be excellent and proficient takes time and focus - Sometimes as long as more than a year. After I severely injured my ankle, it took me a year before almost nailing familiar spins again. 4. You aren’t gonna be at your best ALL.THE.TIME, but you’re still a team and in it together - There were times when my fellow teammates had to do difficult moves almost 10 times in a row just so that I can do a decent run, and they did it without complain. The patience and grace gave me faith that I too can do it 5. Orient towards a common picture of good - When you share with each other your picture of good and align to a common vision, it makes the journey together a much easier and enjoyable one 6. Dance is not everything - This applies to work too. At the end of the day, it’s the sense of purpose, satisfaction and bonds that we fuels us and that we leave (or live) with How do your team mates support each other mutually? What do you do outside of work that fuels you? I’d love to hear from you! Meanwhile, leaving here snapshots of moves I struggle with and my best (and last) run this season - A gratitude momento of this year’s dance cycle and its positive impact on my being and work life. #workandlife #growth #learnings #teamwork

Still Riding the High from Our First Lifting Event? So Are We! What an incredible start to our Specialist Series at UNTIL Soho! Led by the powerhouse that is Khrys Speed, we had the privilege of diving deep into Olympic Weightlifting, guiding lifters of all abilities through tailored workshops focused on perfecting their snatch, clean & jerk, and squat mechanics. The energy, the drive, and the passion in the room were truly something special. A huge thank you to Inspire Physio & Fitness, whose on-site performance testing and real-time feedback took the experience to the next level, ensuring that each lifter left with actionable insights to keep improving. Work-life balance means different things to different people. While many emphasize rest and relaxation, for me, it's about pushing my limits both mentally and physically. As someone with a competitive sports background and 25 years in recruitment, I prioritize balance without the poolside cocktails. This weekend, I'll be participating in the Tweedlove Enduro at the TweedLove Festival - a unique blend of world-class riders and enduro enthusiasts. Racing isn't everyone's idea of R&R, but it's how I strive to be the best in both work and life. #WorkLifeBalance #PushingLimits

The weather is turning colder, and winter is on the horizon. Alyssa Gillund, a physical therapist with MercyOne Genesis offers tips on how to prepare for exercising in the cold. She says you should warm-up first with dynamic exercise. That means moving in the same way as the exercise you plan to do, but not static stretches, which can actually cause injury. Also, make sure you are using safety devices. Since there is less daylight during winter months, make sure you have reflective clothing, or lights. Run with a group and if you are alone, tell someone when and where you are going. Avoid icy sidewalks and dress accordingly. And, if you decide to move your exercise routine indoors, try to mix it up by biking or swimming instead of running. Cross training will help prevent injury, as well. If you start having pain, she says don’t wait and see a physical therapist. She says at MercyOne Genesis an initial check-up is free of charge. https://lnkd.in/gZWQztW6 #exercises #abs #physicalfitness #strengthening #swimming #mobility #muscles #weightlifting #weighttraining #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapists #physicalhealth #healthcare #healthandwellness #healthandwellbeing

For many, running is more than just exercise, it’s our freedom, and escape from life’s stresses. Yet, for Black and minoritized runners, it can come with barriers: from underrepresentation in mainstream fitness spaces to the challenges of navigating microaggressions and stereotypes while simply trying to move through public spaces. To the more severe and insidious harassment by the police or members of the public, that feel a need to question why we are running, or why we are somewhere ‘we shouldn’t be.’ That’s where initiatives like Run Free, by the Emancipated Run Crew (ERC), is highlighted by The Voice Online Newspaper. (link below) come in. This group is not about fitness alone; they’re reshaping how the running community approaches inclusivity. By creating spaces where Black and minoritized runners feel seen, understood, and safe, working to challenge assumptions about where we as Black people “should be”. Why does this matter? The group also opens up broader conversations about equity in wellness spaces. Fitness isn’t only about physical health, it’s about mental and emotional well-being. Feeling ‘othered’ while engaging in these activities can create additional stress, reducing the very benefits they’re meant to provide. As Black people and other ethnic minoritized groups in the UK, we have a much greater likelihood of having worse health outcomes. Take a read of the article and see if it might be time to get involved with, or create your own groups where people like us can put on our trainers and reclaim our health without feeling like we don’t belong. The ERC aims to show that running and walking are not just for the few but for everyone, regardless of race, age, gender, or ability. https://lnkd.in/eY6gBKBu #DiversityInFitness #InclusionMatters #RunningForAll #RepresentationInSport #CommunityWellness
