Recently I was delving into the NAS signaling (starting from #2G and ending up with #5G) to build #Rust library to support this #3GPP protocol...and what a gem is to realize "MS Classmark 3" IE of 3GPP TS 24.008 🙃. It is like a #DNA helix containing the whole history of the evolution of #GSM, moving sequentially to #3G and then to #4G. Such long forgotten "artifacts" (e.g. RF power classes, 8-PSK modulation schemes, HSCSD multislot classes, Dual Transfer Mode, VAMOS) are sitting there and still present within the NAS signaling stack of our most modern phones (it is a price to pay for backward compatibility 😎). 🔦 This week we are excited to share the work of another Open Call 1 awarded project: 6G-SLICE by Allbesmart Lda. In partnership with the University of Oulu, this project tackles the 6G-XR challenge of pushing the boundaries of next-generation #6G technology through end-to-end slicing and RAN resource sharing. ⚙️ 6G-SLICE explores the concept of #networkslicing, which allows different services to use their own customized “slice” of the same network. Through innovative O-RAN architecture enhancements, this project is helping make 6G networks smarter and more efficient. By adding new features like near real-time monitoring and automated adjustments, 6G-SLICE ensures reliable performance and meets the needs of specific services. 🔑 What’s even more exciting is that these project contributions will be made #opensource, allowing the community to benefit and build on them for years to come. Allbesmart is also developing new tools, known as #OAIBOX O-RAN products, which will help automate and improve 6G network performance. In pre-Chat GPT 2022, data centers were buying fewer than one million 800G Transceivers for connecting racks and AI clusters per year. Now the industry is at a 15-20 million unit run rate, noted Loi Nguyen, PhD, SVP of cloud optics at Marvell Technology holding the mic at an exec panel with Broadcom, AMD, Global Foundries and others. Another tidbit. Lasers used to be the largest point of failure. Now it's things like soldering. which is a good sign that reliability is on the upswing.
