Industrial AI – an overnight sensation, 30 years in the making. Siemens on #generativeAI in #Industry40, from #HannoverMesse2024. Takeaway: genAI services are coming quick for industry; Siemens is not messing about; more reason (just reason) to buy #private5G networks, perhaps. There’s something funny about a captain of industry (Industrie 4.0) scratching his head when his boiler breaks down at his French summer house. But this was the tale that Cedrik Neike, chief executive at Siemens Digital Industries Software, told Hannover Messe on Monday (April 22) to illustrate the power of generative AI in the industrial space. The point was that, having phoned for help, there was a communication breakdown as a French boiler man attempted to make sense of a German boiler manual. Neike, a Franco-German, played the AI, and translated for the plumber. The message from Siemens at Hannover Messe is that generative AI is the industrial revolution, and that this kind of multilingual error-code nonsense never needs to happen again on the factory floor. More than this, of course, all that rarefied engineering knowhow – acquired over decades in manufacturing environments, and headed for retirement, or else studied at PhD-level in elite technical colleges, and hard to find and expensive to hire – can now be recorded in software, and made instructional and interactive so that low-paid college leavers can fill their big work boots. And so the captains of industry can get on with their cheese boards. That’s mean; but you get the idea. Hannover Messe is a gargantuan industrial fair in the middle of nowhere. (Hanover is sleepy, and expensive, compared to most trade-fair towns.) It is where every over-hyped technology comes to live and die, and then, in most cases, to be resurrected as distinctly innovative and cumulatively useful digital solutions to optimise industrial processes. Siemens said this on Monday of 3D printing, IoT, and digital twins, which, after hype and gloom, are all now vital to industry. It might say the same of 5G. But it does not say the same of generative AI. The hype curve will not flatten, it implied. Honestly, coming here, filled with stories about the early-stage horrors of AI hallucination, and convinced the same issues of quality and access (garbage in / out) will apply, I was a little sceptical. But the big boys are all-in. Perhaps Hannover Messe is not the place to look for the truth of it, but when a juggernaut firm with 60 percent of the industrial automation market says, with such earnest wide-eyed zeal, that the AI hype is real, then… it is probably worth reporting at least. In a week when Palantir announces partnerships with AWS, Anthropic, Accenture, and Meta, it’s a good time to share my INSEAD case on the most important AI company that many people don’t know:  “Palantir Technologies: Enabling AI and Data Science Transformation for Organizations” https://lnkd.in/giThSWMt Of my recent trio of short cases (Tesla / OpenAI / Palantir), this is the one that provokes the richest conversation about how large, established organizations can create value with AI in the face of the inertia and low-powered incentives that we expect from big companies. The case discusses Palantir’s approach to data-science transformation, including forward-deployed data engineering, ontology, digital twins, end-to-end data security, which are key issues that executive leaders struggle with in embracing AI. With roots in defense, intelligence, and other government research, Palantir expanded offerings to commercial clients over the past decade, embedding itself in top corporations in the US, Europe, and East/Southeast Asia.   Reference clients like BP, Airbus, Coca Cola, Cleveland Clinic, Fujitsu, and Hyundai have been foundational for their enterprise growth. In my qualitative research about how established organizations adopt AI, Palantir and their product suites - Gotham, Foundry, Apollo, and AIP - seemed to often be involved in the most interesting applications in the companies I studied, as they provided a level of business impact that has been difficult for even the most sophisticated bigtech or consulting competitors to match, which may explain the alliances (AWS, Anthropic, Accenture, Meta, etc) that are being announced now. The company has an interesting history, somehow managing to remain non-partisan despite deep engagement across different administrations with democratic governments worldwide, while taking principled stands on issues of western defense, e.g., Ukraine & Israel. Palantir is named after the indestructible magical balls used to see the world and communicate, which is an apt name for a data-science company with roots in intelligence & defense. Key future challenges for Palantir include continuing to scale their enterprise salesforce as competition with bigtech and consulting firms increases, managing the balance between high-cost forward-deployed engineering and productization in their platforms (especially, AIP), and crafting a strategy that continues to work in a world of AGI.

Interesting trustworthy tech development in #AI! Transparency is one of the most crucial components in digital trust and auditability one of the most difficult to achieve for complex systems. In new research, Anthropic describes a way to open up the 'black box' and uncover how large language models determine their responses. This could represent a new standard for how we should expect developers to build in transparency and auditability in their innovations and help support digital safety and other responsible development practices. I believe we need to connect some concepts to explain this. Somewhere between realism and randomness lies art. Art is the product of a highly generative process, where diversity and creativity are its virtues. Consider the best generative models, like diffusion, which start from random noise. Art should not be too real. The entropy of life, intelligence, art, and noise are all different, requiring different levels of energy for emergent representation. Just a wild thought inspired by an AI guru.
