We're proud to amplify the recent launch of "Your Sexual Health Toolkit" and "Our Stories, Our Journeys: A Sexual Health Game," created by Project SHINE: a multidisciplinary network of intellectual and developmental disability experts, self-advocates, and sexual and reproductive health professionals, including PPGNY. The toolkit, which has been created with and tested by young people with disabilities, the Project SHINE advisory board, and youth ambassadors, includes engaging content on sexual and reproductive health, anatomy, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, sexual behavior and activity, pleasure, body image, and relationships. Although this toolkit can be used by anyone interested in learning more about bodies and sexuality, the launch hopes to be a contribution in the quest for disability, queer, and trans rights in all their intersections. Youth with disabilities have direct access to the toolkit or can choose to use it with trusted adults. Too often, young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are left out of sex education conversations, and these disparities and lack of inclusion double when it comes to queer and trans youth with disabilities. Project SHINE continues the work to address inequities in sexual health by ensuring accessible education and health services for youth with intellectual and developmental disability ages 16-24 and the people who support them. This Month’s Feature: The Pitfalls of Multicultural Marketing: Why Cultural Nuances Matter The term "multicultural marketing" is often used as a catch-all phrase to describe efforts aimed at reaching diverse audiences. It’s a term that’s become synonymous with inclusivity, but it’s also one that can be dangerously oversimplified. The reality is that grouping communities into a single communication strategy overlooks the unique cultural nuances, values, and experiences of each group. To build authentic connections, marketers must move beyond the one-size-fits-all approach and dig deeper to understand the individual cultures they are engaging with. In this post, we’ll explore the pitfalls of oversimplified multicultural marketing and the benefits of a more culturally informed approach.   The Monolith Myth: Not All Communities Are the Same  When marketing campaigns attempt to engage “multicultural audiences,” they often fall into the trap of assuming that these diverse communities share the same experiences, preferences, and values. Terms like “people of color” or “minority groups” can create an illusion of unity, but they fail to account for the vast differences between cultures. The lived experiences of Black Americans are not the same as those of Latino, Asian, or Indigenous communities, and each group has its own history, language, traditions, and challenges that shape its perspectives.   For example, healthcare disparities within the Black community may stem from centuries of medical mistrust, while in the Latino community, language barriers and immigration status may play a larger role. These distinctions are critical because they influence how individuals receive, interpret, and act upon healthcare communications. Tubman Health, a multifaceted healthcare system in Seattle, is revolutionizing healthcare for communities of color and other marginalized groups. Named after Harriet Tubman, who fought for the liberation of people from oppressive systems and provided clinical care as a nurse, Tubman Health is a healthcare system designed to meet the health needs of these communities. Dr. Peter Asante, Director of Health Services, emphasizes the importance of tackling health from a systemic and clinical perspective to create a comprehensive care model. He believes that health inequities experienced by Black communities are not just medical issues, but are deeply woven into the fabric of larger systemic injustices. Tubman Health is not just about providing services; it's about transforming the way care is delivered in service to the community. The organization is actively engaged in policy work at all levels of government, advocating for policies that support the health of marginalized communities, including championing the work of their community partners. The organization has reached out to 24,000 community members to understand their needs and feedback, and has implemented those needs to create a healthcare model that is holistic, integrative, and truly centered on the personhood of the community. It was my honor to give voice to some of the realities of today’s best birthing practices. Thank you to Black Women Birthing Justice, the authors, the full team at Tantor, and to the countless courageous women that gathered in caring community to share their wisdom and experiences with us all. Battling Over Birth: Black Women and the Maternal Health Care Crisis reveals hard truths—powerful findings on the role of racism, coercion, inadequate prenatal care, the pressures undermining breastfeeding, and the lack of access to alternatives to a broken maternal health-care system as key threads of black women's birth experiences. Battling Over Birth, a new human rights report from Black Women Birthing Justice, shares stories from over 100 women who recently gave birth in California. The report reveals the culture of fear and coercion that has transformed birth into a battleground, a deep lack of trust of our hospitals, and a broken maternal healthcare system that fails too many black women. The report shakes up our understanding of where state violence happens, and who it happens to; putting the human rights spotlight onto a system that is often unaccountable to black communities. Battling Over Birth also provides solutions. Join us to advocate for women's health! Sign on to a letter to Congress advocating for increased funding for women’s health research in the FY2025 appropriations process - the extended deadline to sign is Wednesday, April 24th. There are 750 signatures from individuals, investors, researchers, nonprofits, clinicians, investors, patient advocates and more and we would love to see 1,000. Highlights of the Letter to Congress Advocating for Women's Health Research Funding: 💠 Add $500 million to the NIH Common Fund within the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill focused on women’s health research and innovation for FY2023. 💠 Double the funding for the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health from FY24 budget of $76.48 million to $153.9 million within the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill. 💠 Establish a $10 million FDA Center of Excellence on Women’s Health Innovation within the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations bill that ensures clinical trial design is representative of disease impact in the broader population, and includes a fast track process in women’s health. 💠 Create $50 million Women’s Health Research Program within the DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program within the Defense Appropriations bill and require an annual report to Congress of the amount and percentage of funding for women’s health research within the agency. 💠 Include $13.7 billion for women Veterans’ healthcare, including $1.1 billion toward women’s gender-specific care within the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill. 💠 Establish a $10 million NSF Women’s Health Innovation Program within the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill dedicated to computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), and/or engineering to support research and development within digital technologies to advance the health of women in recognition of the historical exclusion of women limiting accuracy of data used in AI to ensure bias that can be harmful is eliminated.   Co-sign the letter here https://lnkd.in/ggkHxeTQ Thank you to Liz Powell for coordinating this effort. #womenshealth #funding #congress

Why is it Radical? Radical doulas expand upon the support and care model of mainstream doulas in their attention to diversity and social justice. The radical doula model is inclusive and advocates for underserved and marginalized groups of people. A Radical Mental Health Doula is inherently intersectional, feminist, anti-racist, anti-classist, anti-ableist, anti-homophobic, and trans-inclusive. We Advocate! As a framework that is catered towards the individual rather than the institution, the RMHD project aims to provide a platform for marginalized and underserved people experiencing mental health challenges to uphold their rights, needs, dignity, and humanity, while amplifying their voices. Our individualized model of care complements other mental health services. RMHDs support and enable people experiencing mental health challenges to move through encounters with different services more smoothly, with less violence, and in ways that would better uphold their rights and dignities. The Radical Mental Health Doula Project is a community-engaged research project that values the voices of people with lived experiences in mental health.
