Last week, I attended the Future of News D.C. Summit. Stagwell, a global marketing network that includes Allison Worldwide, hosted a gathering of publishers and journalists from the news industry to discuss the current evolution of newsrooms. Ray Day, APR Day, the Vice Chair of Stagwell, moderated a panel featuring "icons of the media" from the Washington Post (@Leigh Ann Caldwell), New York Post (@Caitlin Doornbos), CNN (Kasie Hunt), AP (@Anna Johnson), the Guardian (@Hugo Lowell), and Axios (@Alex Thompson). Panel insights included: ·      Current media landscape - There was a unanimous agreement that traditional media is facing a very challenging era. However, there was confidence in the continued demand for premium quality content and a recognized need to distribute content where audiences are currently engaged, such as email and social media. ·      Low trust in news - This issue is being addressed by journalists through increased transparency of verifiable source material, greater local community engagement, and a humble response to feedback. ·      Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news - The propagation of these trends is driven by foreign agents, social media algorithms, and inadequate media literacy. I see where you're coming from, and I agree with your perspective. However, the rise of owned channels has given brands and businesses more control over their narratives, allowing them to bypass traditional #media #gatekeepers and speak directly to their target #audiences. This shift meant that companies can now deliver their messages on their terms, whether or not they captured the attention of #journalists. In many cases, businesses no longer depend on press coverage to get their stories out—they're becoming the masters of their own stories; thanks to the dominance of Meta - Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter (X - I still will call it Twitter, to be honest), and Google as primary distributors of news content. What’s even more interesting, (at least in the East African Market) is the reversal in dynamics: journalists are increasingly looking to brand websites, social media, and other owned platforms to find #business stories. This shows how much control has shifted into the hands of businesses, and why traditional press releases often feel secondary or supplementary. Unless a story holds significant public interest—where media reach can amplify the message—businesses no longer break back to gain #visibility. So let me say this; the press release model has turned into one small part of many broader, multi-channel communications strategies. But innovative media still rules ( I will tell you why), and when it collapses, we will know. Brandcom Consulting Limited.

NPR and PBS should be on their own. The Public Broadcasting Act, the LBJ era media ecosystem is long gone. They take 8% from Corporation of Public Broadcasting, 10% from colleges, 8% from state and local budgets. PBS takes 15% from the feds, 13% from states, 3% local governments, 8 % colleges- that's 39% before folks and rich foundations. What they provide is balanced in some places, like Amanpour and Firing Line, and bias in most other places. NPR is a mouthpiece for the MSM , and the current long list of advocacy from Roe v Wade to pro - Palestine coverage. The design during the great society was needed, now in our vast array of media sources, the federal government does not need to fund any of it. C- Span can carry the record keeping load , with their truly unbiased , long form coverage. If you want NPR and PBS ( nee American BBC) you can pay for it.
