Archaeologist Technician- Part Time On-Call (Nationwide)

Jacobs is looking for a part-time on call staff archaeologist to work on a variety of projects throughout the Midwest and eastern and southern US. This position involves providing cultural resources support for planning, engineering, and construction services to renewable energy, government, military, transportation and commercial clients. The archaeologist career path provides the opportunity to work on projects that require compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Native American Graves Repatriation and Protection Act (NAGPRA), and state regulations. All work will be conducted under the guidance of senior cultural resources staff.

The ideal candidate will have a B.A. in anthropology with experience working in the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Southeastern U.S., experience in conducting archaeological surveys, including mapping, data recording, site documentation, and photography). Other qualifications include excellent writing and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, and technological proficiency that includes some experience working with GIS and relational databases. Frequent travel is expected for the position. Primary duties will include Responsible for assigned Phase I, II and III field projects. This will involve conducting pre-field research, directing fieldwork and laboratory analysis, and preparing technical reports. It is imperative that candidates be able to work 8 to 10 hour days in a variety of conditions and understand that there will be frequent stays away from the office. The successful candidate should have a a desire to grow personally as well as professionally with each project.

Additional responsibilities:

• Coordinate compliance with NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, NEPA, state environmental regulations, and other laws relating to cultural resources.

• Conduct archival research and background records reviews.

• Coordinate and conduct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork (Phases I-III) and monitoring.

• Conduct analyses and prepare technical reports for projects that involve cultural resources.

• Evaluate eligibility of resources for listing in the NRHP and state registers of historic properties.

• Support clients during agency and tribal consultation.

• Provide support to and work with senior-level cultural resources staff.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field

• Minimum of 1 year of professional archaeological fieldwork experience with extensive experience completing construction monitoring and collaborating with tribal monitors.

• Knowledge of historic preservation laws and policies, including NEPA, NHPA, ARPA and NAGPRA.

• Familiarity with state regulations and cultural resources policies for Upper Midwest and Great Plains states.

• Experience using GPS technology.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Must be capable of walking for long periods of time over unfamiliar terrain, excavating shovel tests and test units, screening soil, and carrying field equipment.

• Must be willing and able to travel frequently and for long periods of time, as needed.

• Must be motivated and able to work safely with minimum supervision.
