As part of our ongoing growth and commitment to excellence, we are seeking a talented and experienced Chief Broadcast Meteorologist/Director of Science and Weather to lead our weather team and elevate our weather coverage to new heights.


Position Overview: We are looking for a dynamic and visionary Chief Meteorologist - Director of Science and Weather to oversee all aspects of our weather department and serve as the primary authority on weather-related matters for our broadcast operations. As a key member of our leadership team, you will have the opportunity to shape our weather coverage strategy, mentor and develop our meteorologists, and ensure the highest standards of accuracy, relevance, and engagement in our weather reporting.


Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the weather department, setting goals, objectives, and priorities to enhance our weather coverage.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the weather team, including assigning duties, managing schedules, and monitoring performance.
  • Develop and implement innovative weather presentation techniques and storytelling formats to captivate and inform our audience.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including news, production, and digital media, to integrate weather coverage seamlessly across multiple platforms.
  • Serve as the primary on-air meteorologist for major weather events, delivering authoritative and compelling weather updates to our viewers.
  • Conduct regular training sessions and workshops to enhance the skills and expertise of our meteorologists and weather staff.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in meteorological science, technology, and broadcasting trends to ensure our weather coverage remains cutting-edge and relevant.
  • Foster strong relationships with external partners, including government agencies, meteorological organizations, and community stakeholders, to enhance our weather forecasting capabilities and community outreach efforts.
  • Willingness to help create and implement new weather programming on air, online, through apps and on social media. This may include expansion of weather-focused programming and STEM-related projects.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related field. Advanced degrees and professional certifications are preferred.
  • Extensive experience as a broadcast meteorologist, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality weather forecasts and presentations.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor a team of meteorologists and weather staff.
  • Exceptional on-camera presence with outstanding communication skills and the ability to connect with diverse audiences.
  • In-depth knowledge of meteorological software, forecasting models, and graphics systems used in television weather broadcasting.
  • Proficiency in television production techniques and the ability to excel in a fast-paced, live broadcasting environment.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for identifying opportunities to enhance weather coverage and engagement.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate broadcast schedules and breaking weather coverage.

Working Conditions:


  • Broadcast meteorologists typically work in television studios, where they deliver live weather reports and forecasts to viewers.
  • The job may involve occasional travel for on-location reporting or special events.
  • Adherence to strict deadlines and the ability to perform well under pressure are essential in this role.
  • Work hours may vary depending on the broadcast schedule and weather events, requiring flexibility and availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays.


The Location: Heritage Broadcasting is based in beautiful Northern Michigan.
