Director of Accounting

The Director of Accounting position is responsible for the management of the general ledger to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and accountability, including appropriate recording and review of accounting transactions and balances. This position directs and oversees accounting staff and coordinates the month and year-end close with those staff. Accounting areas to be supervised by this position include some or all of the accounting for plant and property, leases, debt, student loans, cash, travel advances, sales tax and unclaimed property, among other areas. Position is also involved in the University’s tax filings, including the University’s Form 990, and other reports to external agencies and organizations. This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Finance & Controller.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Supervise accounting staff. Responsible for accounting areas assigned including all related schedules which may include accounting for a) leases and debt, including identifying possible leasing arrangements and recording monthly debt service accruals, bond discount, and issuance cost amortization; b) property, plant and equipment including overseeing all CIP entries, depreciation schedules and yearend note disclosures, working with the Budget Office to maintain the integrity of capital project funds to approved budgets, closing completed capital projects, and tracking bond drawdowns, if applicable; and c) all cash transactions and the reconciliation of all bank accounts, including accounting for student loan and financial aid receipts, student tuition, housing deposits, credit card adjustments and travel advance accounts.
• General Ledger Closings and Financial Reporting - Assist with the annual financial audit and the preparation of the annual audit report. Also perform financial accounting research from time to time for the Controller's Office and assist with the implementation of new accounting standards, when applicable. Perform month- and year-end closing analyses and adjustments related to accounting issues and other as assigned.
• Taxes – Responsible for the University's tax filings, including the annual Form 990 using tax software and the annual Form 990T. Performs tax research as needed and assists in possible University audits by taxing authorities. Also assists with the annual State unclaimed property filings and the filing of state sales tax.
• Student System- Supervises accounting related to the Banner student system, including the reconciliation of all aspects of the student system to the General Ledger. Also assist in the reconciliation of the parking system to the student system and general ledger as well as to payroll withholdings and the general ledger.
• Assists with financial reports filed with regulatory agencies or outside organizations and other special projects as may be assigned by the Controller's Office.
  
  

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree. Concentration in Accounting. 5-8 years of related experience.

Desired Qualifications

Master's degree. Concentration in Accounting. Experience in Higher Education.
