A global leader in sustainable material recycling is looking for a Environmental Health and Safety Manager to serve as the principal liaison for the EHS department, focusing on safety, risk management, occupational health, environmental stewardship, and regulatory adherence. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator with a deep understanding of safety and occupational health practices. Working cross-functionally, the new team member will contribute to business efficiency by providing comprehensive support while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Build trusting, collaborative relationships with managers, supervisors, and workers across all functions within the organization. Influence perception and behavior to support progression of proactive safety culture.
  • Manage daily safety meetings and conduct inspections of all active work areas. Support and communicate regularly with employees, identify and address hazards, improve existing practices, and complete compliance-related duties.
  • Develop, implement, execute, and manage strategies to prevent workplace injuries and environmental incidents. Gain comprehensive insight into operation, working conditions, human factors, etc. to inform your analyses, assessments, and recommendations.
  • Conduct workplace and work practice risk assessments, audits, and inspections in support of continued improvement and maintaining compliance.
  • Address any unsafe conditions or practices promptly. When necessary, stop working until hazard is mitigated.
  • Perform risk assessments and assist in the implementation of effective control measures. Recognize and verify the efficacy of in-place control measures.
  • Identify unsafe equipment operation and conditions. Retain familiarity with safe operation of various types of heavy mobile and stationary equipment (including but not limited to forklifts, skidsteers, front-end loaders, telehandlers, excavators, material handlers with grapple and magnet attachments, cranes, aerial lifts, scissor lifts).
  • Report findings to facility manager and collaborate on action plan to address inadequacies.
  • Conduct and Manage Employee Training
  • Manage and track employee required training and associated recordkeeping. Manage physical and digital files, digital Leaning Management System.
  • Conduct in-person training in classroom and field settings. This includes but is not limited to orientation and annual refresher training, heavy equipment operational assessments and authorization, on-the-job coaching, and safety meetings.
  • Coordinate training with appropriate third party when necessary.
  • Contribute to the continued improvement of existing training material and development of new programs as new or modified operations are adopted.
  • Incident Response and Investigation
  • Record, investigate, and analyze incidents, near-misses, and other unsafe acts and conditions.
  • Assist with and direct immediate post-incident response, scene securement, information collection, and notification. This may include assisting in the transport of employees in need of medical aid/examination.
  • Identify and further investigate contributing factors. Conduct interviews with involved personnel and witnesses. Preserve and collect evidence.
  • Conduct formal root-cause analysis when appropriate.
  • Formulate corrective and preventative action plan with support of operational and Safety, Health, Environmental management. Use research, technical knowledge, input from experienced affected personnel, human factors, etc. to support analysis and conclusions.
  • Follow-up to ensure timely completion of actions.
  • Document comprehensive investigation report, including findings, analysis, and action assignments using internal Incident Reporting System.
  • Support modified duty program by establishing communication with occupational clinics, ensuring managers and employees understand work modification, and checking in frequently with injured employees.
  • Conduct or Support Duties Pertaining to Environmental Compliance and Protection
  • Understand and monitor compliance with environmental regulations and permit requirements pertaining to site operations. Identify gaps and work with facility manager, VP Safety, Health, Environmental, and environmental consultants to implement corrective actions.
  • Assist with coordinating emergency release response and reporting to regulatory authorities.
  • Assist site management with completion of periodic inspections, visual monitoring, stormwater sample collection, and all other activities pertaining to environmental protection as required by State, Federal, and Local laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances, facility permit(s), SWPPP, and SPCC.
  • Maintain organized files of all required records.
  • Assist with updating SWPPP and SPCC in concert with applicable site and regulation changes. Maintain communication with environmental consultants to ensure SWPPP/SPCC accurately reflect on-site operations.
  • Conduct or support periodic required review of site-specific SWPPP and SPCC.


Requirements:

  • Associate Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field from an accredited institution and five years full time safety and/or occupational health operations; An additional four years of relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirements
  • Demonstrate broad technical knowledge of relevant regulations and standards with depth in some areas; experienced in researching and interpreting laws and regulations
  • Must have experience leading and recording comprehensive incident investigations and skillfully conducting post-incident interviews
  • Must have proven applied experience using recognized, formal root cause analysis method
  • Experience conducting classroom and on-the-job training
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills which can be applied effectively and persuasively with employees, management, regulators, customers, and members of the public
  • Build rapport and trusting working relationships with colleagues in all job positions; respectful and approachable; willing to teach, coach, and develop others
  • Mentor with empowerment prioritized over exerting control; comfortable being assertive when necessary
  • Skilled at public speaking, establish a commanding presence in meetings and training settings; can tailor approach according to audience
  • Experienced in effectively explaining technical and/or complex topics to persons without specific technical knowledge
  • Demonstrate active listening skills
  • Ability to deal effectively with people and resolve conflicts and problems
  • Maintain composure and stability in stressful and ambiguous circumstances
  • Must be skilled at prioritizing, highly organized, and self-motivated; able to manage a demanding workload, meet critical deadlines, and work under minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills; position requires an eye for detail and accuracy
  • Seek to understand underlying causes of problems to develop and implement effective solutions
  • Ability to make decisions and/or take action based on sound, logical, and informed assessment of circumstances
  • Ability to produce written incident reports with clear and accurate recounting of events which can be understood by persons unfamiliar with the operation in which the incident occurred (Workers Comp case managers, for example)

Preferred qualifications include:

  • OSHA 501 authorized trainer
  • Safety Professional and/or IH certifications
  • Experience training on and/or operating lift trucks, cranes, material handlers, MEWPs, other heavy mobile equipment
  • Practical rigging/lifting experience
  • Hot work programs, heavy metals exposure monitoring
  • Affiliation with recognized Safety Associations
