The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is seeking a highly motivated and creative Internal Communications and Engagement Officer to join our dynamic team in New York city.

In this fast-paced role, you will play a pivotal part in developing and implementing strategic communication plans to foster a strong and connected North American network. You will be the go-to resource for internal communications needs, crafting and delivering compelling content, championing clear communication practices, and driving employee engagement.


Main purpose of job:

We are looking for an individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills, a passion for storytelling, and a proven ability to engage diverse audiences. You will possess a strong understanding of internal communication best practices and experience with content management systems and email marketing tools. Additionally, you will be a collaborative team player with a talent for building strong relationships and fostering a positive work environment.

This role will lead on shaping the DBT's internal communication strategy within a fast-paced and growing department. You will make a real difference by connecting colleagues, fostering team spirit, and amplifying individual voices. The role will be part of a vibrant team in New York City, working collaboratively to build a thriving transatlantic business partnership.


Internal communications:

Develop and execute comprehensive internal communication strategies, ensuring consistent and impactful messaging. Partner with internal stakeholders to gather and curate compelling narratives showcasing the achievements and contributions of our teams in North America. Collaborate with teams across the North American network to identify and capture key stories and achievements. Develop engaging and informative content for various internal communication channels, including newsletters, intranet platforms, and town halls. As part of your role in internal comms you will lead the Marketing and Comms Allies Programme, a network of colleagues across the North America network, providing them with the skills and opportunities to best promote our narratives in their sectors and regions.


Email marketing and engagement:

Support the wide range sector teams in North America with their email marketing and engagement, advising them on messaging and visuals to maximise impact and increase click-through rates. Working alongside our marketing team to develop and deliver engaging content that is General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant and in line with current best practices. Generating reports and analysing the data to identify areas for improvement to drive engagement.


Marketing Operations:

As key part of the North America Marketing and Comms team, engaging with sector teams early to understand their creative ideas and how the Marketing and Comms team can help them deliver their goals in innovative and imaginative way. Working closely with our senior graphic designer, managing the marketing operation tools to ensure our complex marketing and communication projects are delivered on time and effectively, providing creative insight and support to the process.


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Creative internal comms content - craft compelling narratives for our internal channels such as our Trade Commissioners Monthly Message and contribute towards DBT HQ’s internal updates, such as interviews, features, and bite-sized updates that keep everyone in the loop.
  • Supporting the network with Internal Comms - support teams with creative content, whether it's crafting video scripts for town halls, designing eye-catching infographics for holiday announcements, or responding to ad-hoc requests from senior leadership.
  • Strategic communications - work closely with our Executive Office, HR, and colleagues in London, develop strategic internal comms plans and best practices for teams across the network, ensuring consistent and impactful messaging.
  • Storytelling - unearth the incredible work happening across our teams, from trade wins to tech breakthroughs, celebrating successes and shout about the fantastic things we're achieving in North America.
  • Employee advocacy - your work will directly connect colleagues, build a strong team spirit, and amplify individual voices.
  • Manage the Marketing and Comms Allies Program - recruiting and upskilling champions from across the North America network to drive collaboration and deliver more impactful internal and external comms.
  • Email marketing and engagement - assist with email list growth and segmentation for email marketing and engagement, scheduling email sends and monitor campaign performance metrics
  • Project management - manage the Marketing and Comms’ teams operational tools, such as Lytho, Stova and Microsoft Dynamics to ensure projects are delivered on time.
  • Data analytics - track the effectiveness of our comms efforts, analyse email marketing campaigns, and generate reports to showcase our impact.
  • Contribute to the Consulate team and being an active member of the wider team here in New York.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Resources managed:

This role manages our marketing tools, ensuring projects and resources are managed to enable the wider Marketing and Comms teams to support our network and maximise our impact.


Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to diverse audiences.
  • Proven experience in communications, ideally within a fast-paced and complex business environment.
  • A strong passion for building relationships and fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Understanding of different media platforms
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative and team-oriented approach with a passion for building relationships.


Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Permanent Residents, A and NATO visa holders with EAD cards, and L2 visa holders with an up-to-date I-94 form.


Language requirements:

Language: English

Level of language required: excellent written skills required.


Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience in internal communications desired.
  • Experience with content management systems and email marketing tools.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in crafting engaging content across various media platforms, including written, digital, and video.
  • Working knowledge of content management systems and email marketing tools.
  • Knowledge of the UK and their trading relationships with the US and Canada
  • Previous experience in project management
