The Scarsdale Schools are seeking a dynamic and innovative candidate for a K-5 Library Media Specialists at Greenacres Elementary School. Greenacres spans grades K-5, and has an enrollment of roughly 350 students. We offer rich and varied educational programs, along with an active, supportive parent body. The successful candidate will have an expansive knowledge of child and adolescent, text, fiction and non-fiction and demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively with students and faculty whilst maintaining a welcoming and engaging learning space. Qualified candidates will possess appropriate NYS certification. Individuals holding another certification but working toward or planning to work toward the Library Media Specialist credential may be considered.

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Principal, the elementary librarian serves as an instructional leader. He or she collaborates with the teaching staff to develop a love of literature in students, and support them when they are working on research projects. The librarian uses a wide range of reading and other educational materials; maintains library collection at school site; develops appropriate programs for students utilizing library resources; and instructs students and others on the proper use of the resources available in the school library.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises the school library operations.
  • Evaluates, selects, and requisitions appropriate books and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Works collaboratively with other teaching staff to select books and other instructional materials; keeps students and teaching staff informed regarding new acquisitions for use in the school library.
  • Collaborates with the building computer teacher on technology/research projects
  • Collaborates with teachers and staff to develop curricular content that integrates library media and information technology skills in a manner consistent with the educational philosophy and valued pedagogic practices.
  • Serves as a resource to students to provide research assistance.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials; assists students and teachers with the use of the system.
  • Oversees the process for loaning library material to students and teachers.
  • Continues to pursue professional development by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and participates in outreach to the larger Scarsdale community.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a positive and welcoming learning environment in the school library.
  • Assists with the preparation and administration of the school library budget.
  • Trains and supervises library support employees.
  • Works collaboratively with administrators, elementary coordinators, and the other elementary librarians to develop and assess the elementary library program.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Uses standard library hardware such as computers, scanner, and printer.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use software applications as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others in the school community.
  • Understand the importance of using reliable sources, including subscription databases, that are hosted on each school library’s website.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in the school library. Should be able to kneel and carry books.

Certification/License

  • New York State Initial or Professional Certification as a Library/Media Specialist. Note: Individuals who are working on acquiring this credential, or anticipate acquiring it, will also be considered.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Masters Degree required.

Experience

Successful prior experience working in a school library is preferred.
