Nature And Scope Of Job

The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day Program is seeking a Department Head to supervise, maintain, and guide all things music in the half-day arts program. Department Head for Music is a 30 hour per week, ten month per year position. The Department Head serves as an educational leader, liaison to the Music faculty, responsible for creating, facilitating and managing the curriculum within their department. The Department Head monitors the execution of procedures to ensure that all students are supervised and challenged in a safe, just, creative and rigorous learning environment.

Achieving artistic excellence requires that the Department Head work collaboratively with the Director and Leadership Team to direct and nurture all members of the department faculty and to communicate effectively with parents of the students in the department. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for scheduling staff and students, supervision and evaluation of Music faculty, monitoring curriculum, recruitment and auditioning of students in cooperation with fellow department heads, discipline, communications on policies and procedures, and monitoring facilities needs and budget.

  • Instrumentalist: jazz, pop and classical
  • Vocalist: jazz and pop (both contemporary and older pop)
  • Theory: levels 1, 2, 3 and jazz theory
  • Vocal and instrumental combos collaborating on jazz and pop

Job Functions And Responsibilities

Department Heads shall:

  • Promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for artistic performance and monitor responsibility for behavior, conduct mid-year and end-of-year evaluations for department faculty. Work with department faculty to set annual goals for professional development and to assign non-teaching responsibilities for the school year.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with fellow department heads and arts faculty to promote “whole school” community, including the facilitation of shared performances for departments and whole school community.
  • Collaborate with the Director, Leadership Team and departmental faculty to maintain and develop the program of studies and department curriculum, including the development of new courses, curation of field trips and co-curricular learning experiences, and recruitment of guest artists to supplement the core curriculum.
  • Manage and monitor budget for the department. Advise administration on department needs and recommend appropriate purchases. Monitor the balance of the Departmental Escrow account, coordinate and facilitate fundraising activities to support departmental programming not covered by the instructional budget.
  • Facilitate the creation of a schedule for faculty and students within the department, Facilitate the input of the schedule in scheduling program working closely with the Director and the Registrar for the Arts Academy.
  • Assist the Director in assuring that attendance and grade reporting are accurate.
  • Teach approximately 4-6 hours per week, prepare syllabi and lesson plans, evaluate students and provide grade comments quarterly for each student in each course.
  • Supervise department programs, assisting arts faculty in the development of plans. Assist Director in observing classes on a regular basis to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies and materials consistent with research on arts learning and child growth and development.
  • Coordinate with fellow department Heads in maintaining a roster of qualified substitute teachers, and scheduling their services to cover the absence of departmental faculty.
  • Assist in the recruitment of Arts students by attending Open Houses for both the Academy and the RSCO Fairs. Assist fellow Heads and the Director in planning and implementing events for newly accepted students.
  • Monitor department rooms and facilities assuring the Director is aware of any needs in the building spaces. Also maintain school instruments and facilitate repairs as needed.
  • Facilitate and schedule the End of Year Jury process for all departmental students.
  • Daily support for students and faculty including assisting with discipline and parent communications.
  • Attend weekly Department Head meetings and summer planning sessions.
  • All other responsibility as directed by the Director.

Working Conditions

  • Maintain office on campus to serve students, families and faculty.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Salary to be determined by CREC Central Office and Human Resources.
  • Salary range: $65,000 - $69,000

Requirements

  • Minimum requirement: BA/BFA (In Music preferred). Open to those who hold Connecticut certification.
  • Expertise in music, teaching experience at high school level preferred, administrative experience a plus.
  • Eligibility for a Connecticut State Department of Education Adjunct Arts Instructor Permit required, requirements for permit eligibility: (1) hold a bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher education accredited by the Board of Governors of Higher Education, or regionally accredited, (2) have a minimum of three years of work experience in the arts or one year of work and two years of specialized schooling related to the applicant’s artistic specialty, and (3) at least one hundred eighty hours of cumulative experience working with children in a private or public setting, including, but not limit to, afterschool programs, group lessons, children’s theater, dance studio lessons, and artist-in-residence programs, or at least two years’ experience as a full-time faculty member at an institution of higher education or been employed by an eligible inter-district magnet school prior to July 1,2011 and for at least one year.
