Overview:

Launched in 1983 as Public Interest Projects, a 501(c)(3) public charity, NEO Philanthropy (“NEO”) is a New York based national leader in innovative philanthropic solutions. NEO (i) leads large-scale collaborative grant-making funds on a range of social justice issues; (ii) provides fiscal sponsorship and management to projects and campaigns; (iii) manages donor advised funds; and (iv) develops organization and field-focused capacity building initiatives.

Position

NEO is currently seeking an experienced paralegal to join the NEO Legal team. The paralegal will assist the Legal team with tasks related to corporate governance, record-keeping, regulatory filings and coordinating the provisioning of Legal services such as contracts review and staff training. The paralegal will play a pivotal role (i) supporting board governance efforts; (ii) coordinating legal document intake and reviews; (iii) coordinating the tracking of lobbying activity; (iv) interfacing with insurance brokers; (v) making corporate documents more accessible to staff; (vi) filing regulatory documents; (vii) performing legal research; and (vi) monitoring and flagging for Legal consideration certain compliance-related matters. The Paralegal reports to the Vice President, General Counsel and will be responsible for taking on appropriate duties from time to time, as assigned, that are in the best interest of the Legal department and NEO.

Location:

NEO has a hybrid work remote structure based on job function. NEO’s principal office (the “NYC Office”) is in New York City and the work location for the paralegal is New York City. The paralegal will work in-person at the NYC Office at least one business day per week. The paralegal is expected to attend other events at the NYC Office such as NEO’s Annual Meeting and the NEO holiday party. All staff have the option to select additional days to work in-person in the office.

Vaccine Requirement

NEO follows CDC guidance regarding staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters. Accordingly, and to ensure that the wellness and safety of our staff to the greatest extend possible, NEO requires the COVID-19 vaccination for all staff. Requests for medical and/or religious exemptions from the vaccination requirement will be considered on an individual basis.

Responsibilities

  • Under direction from the Legal department attorneys (the “Attorneys”), the paralegal will assist the Legal team with tasks related to corporate governance, record-keeping, regulatory filings and coordinating the provisioning of Legal services such as contract reviews and staff training. This includes:
    • Assist the Attorneys with the preparation of documents for use by the Attorneys and staff.
    • Work with the Attorneys to proofread contracts and generate template agreements.
    • Coordinate intake and tracking of agreements.
    • Conduct basic research and procure publicly available litigation and corporate documents.
    • Perform notary services, if licensed to do so.
    • Prepare and maintain document files.
    • File and maintain correspondence and legal documents in an office filing system.
    • Monitor legal and regulatory developments in furtherance of Legal’s compliance efforts, which includes necessary updates to corporate policies.
    • Coordinate with HR on updates to Employee Handbook.
    • Coordinate with Operations to track lobbying activity, maintain appropriate corporate insurance coverages, and make corporate documents more accessible to staff via Dropbox and Salesforce platforms.
  • Such other duties as may, from time to time, be assigned.

  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2 - 3 years’ relevant experience required (e.g. office coordination, legal office coordination, or paralegal experience).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, SharePoint, Outlook, Salesforce and Dropbox.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Three (3) or more years’ experience in methods of legal research including computer-assisted research and writing.
  • Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts and applicable laws and to present such information clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to legal and lay persons and groups.
  • Knowledge of the philanthropic ecosystem and funder relationships, a plus.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to think innovatively and strategically, resolve matters effectively and efficiently, and build collaborative relationships cross-functionally throughout the corporation.
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
  • Team player.

Compensation

Compensation for this role will vary depending on the experience of the candidate. The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $70,000. NEO provides generous benefits, which includes medical, dental, vision, life, long term disability, and pet insurance. NEO also administers FSA, commuter benefit, and 401k retirement plans and has generous paid time off and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
