Job Summary

We are looking for an undergraduate student that is highly self-motivated to be part of a multidisciplinary team studying the genetics of osteoarthritis. The lab uses human genetics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, and animal models to understand the factors that contribute to the onset and progression of osteoarthritis. In sum, the undergraduate student would be able to work with scientists in the lab to perform and interpret complex experiments.

Responsibilities

  • Develops scientific research projects with the principal investigator.
  • Stays current with project related scientific literature.
  • Sets up new methods or assays to accomplish scientific objectives.
  • Identifies and implements creative solutions to overcome problems.
  • Organizes, interprets data and derives study conclusions.
  • Summarizes results of clinical studies in the form of scientific abstracts and manuscripts.
  • Serves as a resource to provide clinical and scientific information needed for various initiatives.
  • Assists with grant preparation by researching background, significance and planning statistics.
  • Attends national conferences and presents results of clinical studies.
  • Assists the Principal Investigator in the design, implementation and performance of new protocols and procedures as well as the modification of existing techniques.
  • Performs and directs specialized and complex lab tests, experiments and surgical procedures for studies.
  • Assists with preparing manuscripts and grant proposals

Problem Solving

The undergraduate student assists in the development of research protocols and designs. Modifies and implements procedures. Records and interprets research results. The incumbent works independently, under the general supervision of senior laboratory personnel. Work may include training and supervising other laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent. Problems that cannot be resolved by the incumbent will be referred to the most senior Lab personnel.

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Exposure to animals, hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications

A working knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, and genomics techniques as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests are required.

Demonstrated Human Relations And Effective Communication Skills Also Required.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
