The Health Information Technology (HIT) program at Malcolm X College’s Health Sciences Department is designed for students who aspire to become healthcare professionals in the HIT career field, including professional opportunities as Medical Coders and Billers.
Reporting to the Director - Work Based Education/Learning and in collaboration with the Senior Director of Health Sciences, the Work Based Learning Coordinator - Health Information Technology (HIT) is responsible for planning and administering the work based/clinical learning component of the program’s curriculum, ensuring students are provided with supervised learning experiences to successfully complete curriculum requirements.

The Work Based Learning Coordinator - Health Information Technology (HIT) primary accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Coordinate the placement of students at various work based/clinical sites
- Oversee the progress and performance of students in supervised work based/clinical settings
- Evaluate and assess the quality of work based learning provided by affiliated sites
- Facilitate student opportunities for work based learning opportunities.
Essential Duties
- Coordinates the placement of students in work based/clinical sites including medical facilities and ambulatory care settings to provide students with supervised learning experiences.
- Works with internal and external stakeholders to provide rotations that meet students’ learning objectives and allows them to experience the depth and breadth of practice needed to meet the requirements of entry practices in the HIT field.
- Acts as a liaison between work based/clinical affiliates, HIT faculty, and administrators to ensure a high level of quality in students’ learning experiences.
- Meets with site supervisors and students to assess and evaluate their progress and performance; addresses performance issues and develops strategies to assist students in need of support. Work Based Learning Coordinator – HIT 2
- Maintains records of placement and students’ completion of requirements and compliance with the program’s curriculum requirements.
- Ensures students complete orientation requirements and attend agency-specific orientation prior to starting work based/clinical rotations.
- Maintains student health records; reviews required health and safety documents, including vaccination and drug screening records to ensure they are current and comply with program and work based/clinical site requirements.
- Conducts site visits to assess quality and appropriateness of work-based learning experiences and adherence to requirements of contract agreements.
- Collects data and prepares reports on clinical site visits and students’ learning experiences for inclusion in accreditation, grants, and related reports.
- Participates in evaluating potential new work based/clinical sites and obtaining agreements to expand learning opportunities including internships and apprenticeships.
- Strictly adheres to HIPPA and FERPA regulations.
- Performs administrative duties as assigned in support of the HIT Program.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in a health related field (Health Information Management, Healthcare Management) or a related field OR
- Associate degree from an accredited college with two years of work experience in health information management in a health care environment or program
- Current licensure in the State of Illinois as a Certified Coding Specialist (CPS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or a Registered Health Information Assistant (RHIA).
- Clinical practice that includes experience as a site coordinator of clinical education HIT/HIA or CCS preferred
- Clinical Instructor (CI) in HIT/HIA preferred
- Knowledge of program accreditation standards and regulatory compliance
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment
- Ability to maintain confidential information relating to the program and student records
- Must be self-directed and able to prioritize work
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, MS Teams)
