Writing/ELA Tutor (10-month position)

Provide tutoring for all levels and disciplines in a variety of writing assignments and projects in face to face, group and online environments as well as to provide supplemental instruction to first year writing courses.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive writing tutoring to students in face to face and online environments in all subject areas.
  • Conduct one-on-one and group tutoring by appointment as well as walk-in appointments.
  • Teach documentation styles including MLA and APA.
  • Assess student work according to best practices, provide useful feedback, and document visits.
  • Communicate with Student Success Center staff and faculty regarding the progress of students.
  • Assist in training and supervising of student peer tutors.
  • Ensure students have correctly signed in for and out of their tutoring sessions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Learning Commons staff and Peer Tutors.
  • Plan and facilitate interactive workshops on writing and related college skills.
  • Design instructional materials on reading and writing at the college level.
  • Use a variety of tutoring strategies to assess student understanding, improve student learning, and student success. Model and promote proficient writing and study skills for students.
  • Co-direct the Assisi Opportunity Program for academically underprepared students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Strong writing and proofreading abilities.
  • Experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, with students of all levels of ability.
  • Experience working with students with academically at-risk students.
  • Knowledge of documentation styles, including MLA and APA.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Word.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or closely related field with demonstrable expertise in academic writing and documentation. Master’s degree in English or Education preferred.
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience at the high school or college level.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Flexible schedule: Hours may vary semester to semester or be adjusted mid-semester.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft, Blackboard, Internet, and searching library databases.
  • Experience working with academically underprepared or at-risk students in an educational setting.
  • Ability to work independently and to take initiative in fulfilling responsibilities.

Compensation: $35,000 - $40,000
