Writing Tutor

Mitchell College seeks a Writing Tutor to tutor students in all types of college-level writing. Tutor hours vary. A schedule will be built using the tutor’s preferences and the needs of the Tutoring Center. 10-15 tutoring hours are required each week while the college is in session, with the potential for additional hours after an initial trial period. Tutoring appointments will be offered in-person, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Ideal candidates will be able to work Mondays, Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays, which are currently understaffed. Training is provided in early August; the tutoring center opens to students on August 28.

Responsibilities And Duties

  • Tutor students in key concepts
  • Review classroom topics and assignments
  • Support students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, and research
  • Provide students positive and constructive feedback
  • Demonstrate academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments

Required Education And Experience

  • Master’s Degree in English, writing, journalism, or related field
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Experience working with students with disabilities at the post-secondary level preferred

Key Skills / Knowledge

  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of computer programs including the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Understanding of strategies to tutor neurodiverse students
  • Instructional knowledge regarding academic skills and strategies
  • Ability to utilize college-endorsed software for record-keeping and scheduling
  • Ability to perform the job in person
