- [Instructor] To make a great scan, you need great photos. In this video, we'll talk about camera choices and cover some tips to take the best possible photos. To start, let's choose your camera. Now you don't need a special camera to take a great scan. As the saying goes, "The best camera is often the one you have with you." Smart phones and tablets work well as do point-and-shoot digital cameras. If you're a skilled photographer, the fine control of a DSLR will also give great results. Before you start shooting, you'll want to choose an orientation. Decide whether a horizontal or a vertical orientation is the best choice for your subject and keep the orientation consistent throughout your photo shoot. You'll also need to fix your zoom. If you're using a DSLR, ideally, use a lens with a fixed focal length.
