- Knowing who your stakeholders are and determining how to communicate with them effectively is a very important part of a project, and a vital skill for a project manager. Engaging with stakeholders doesn't happen naturally though, as a project manager, this is something you'll have to master for every project. Let's take a look at the generic stakeholder engagement process that every project manager should know. The first step is to be able to identify your stakeholders. Brainstorm a list, talk to other stakeholders, create stakeholder mind maps, or hold a stakeholder identification workshop. Which ever method you choose, remember forgetting a stakeholder could be to the project's detriment. One tool that is often used to help with identifying stakeholders is CPIG. This is a method of segmenting your stakeholders into four broad categories. C is your customers, the people who want the change, and who will benefit from it.
