Barriers and pre-commitments

If you're someone with big goals and a lot of interests, you're probably juggling multiple projects. But doing so can require a lot of self-discipline. By reducing options and making decisions in advance, you'll be better prepared to succeed in a complex environment. These strategies are called barriers and pre-commitments. So let's start with barriers and I'll use my friend JD Roth as an example for this lesson. A barrier is something that discourages certain behavior, either positive or negative. In JD’s case, he likes to ride his bicycle, but when he moved to a new apartment, he stored the bike in the garage, locked against a rack behind his car. And it was a pain to access. Now, this wasn't an insurmountable problem, but the small annoyance created a barrier to a positive action. It made it harder to do something that he had identified as important to him.
