Challenging your assumptions
To better connect and foster understanding in your relationships, we all know that we need to listen, right? Well, listening alone actually is not enough. You need to demonstrate that you're both listening and you hear what's being said. Here are two essential and foundational techniques to add to your toolkit to help you do exactly this. First, demonstrate your present and curious using open ended questions. Tell me more about that. What do you mean by that? Can you share an example of that? What do you think about? Second, use a technique called reflection. Repeat back what someone has just said to you in your own words and then check your understanding is correct. I hear you saying. Is that the case? It sounds like. Is that right? So you feel. Did I understand correctly? The thing you want the most is, is that right? Reflections are one of the most powerful communication tools because they confirm that you've heard and understand what the other person said. They validate and encourage greater sharing by fostering trust.
