- In business, the greatest honor anyone can give you is a referral. A referral is an endorsement from someone trustworthy. When I was a kid, I loved video games. My friends and I were always trying to find cheat codes. A cheat code could give your video game character special powers, or advance your progress in the game without any additional effort. In business, referrals are a cheat code in the sales process. Relationship sellers spend a lot of time and energy finding the best people to sell to, and then work to establish credibility with those prospects. A referral allows you to jump ahead in the game. An existing client referral will have great alignment, and your credibility is already established via the relationship and endorsement of the person who referred you.
