- I have a colleague of mine at Chapman who recently was having dinner with women who were reentering back into society after 20 years in prison. And what she said was that these women, after 20 years of being in prison, the first time holding a non-plastic cup, or holding a metal cup, or a glass full of water, felt foreign to their brain. Driving in a car after 20 years made them nauseous. They forgot how to actually sit behind the wheel or being a passenger and how it made them nauseous. Cell phones weren't around 20 years ago. They didn't know how to do that. Now, I know it sounds extreme saying we weren't in prison for 20 years. But the analogy is that after 15 months of isolation, we're turning back into the world of socialization, back into society, is going to feel foreign to our brain.
