OpenAI inks deal for Reddit content

👋 Did you catch the most important word in yesterday's big announcement from Reddit, Inc. and OpenAI? It's "recent" Reddit says its deal with OpenAI will emphasize real-time content and "recent topics." For OpenAI's chatbot to be useful, it needs to be tapped into what people are talking about *right now* I think it's interesting how Reddit has become one of the best platforms to discover news. It's one of the few places where you can escape the tyranny of influencers and hype and just read real discussions. It's also kind of fascinating how the internet hasn't really improved on the basic message-board concept in 30 years 💡💡💡 Going to Reddit isn't that much different than going to an AOL chat room was -- and that kind of forum is still hugely valuable

Well, well, well. #Reddit, the once-scrappy underdog of the internet, is all grown up and playing with the big boys now. Their stock is soaring, and they've inked a deal with #OpenAI to feed the insatiable appetite of #ChatGPT. It's a far cry from the Reddit of old, where the ethos was all about community, sharing, and sticking it to the man. I can't help but wonder what those early Redditors would think about their beloved platform selling off their #data - and not even getting a cut of the profits. Talk about adding insult to injury. But hey, times change, right? And if users have the right to delete their #content when they want to... wait, do they? That's the million-dollar question. Because let's be real, once your data is out there, it's not exactly easy to put the genie back in the bottle. Sure, Reddit's recent financial successes are impressive, and their partnerships with Google and OpenAI are undoubtedly lucrative. But at what cost? Is the soul of Reddit being sold off, one API call at a time?

Big W for OpenAI. Partnering with Reddit means access to some of the most useful, nuanced and natural data in the social media space. Reddit's longform content, not constrained by something like X's character limit, should be exceptionally valuable

I don’t know about this one ... while getting lost in Reddit, Inc. threads can be fun, I would consider it the candy or trans fat of data. For my model, I would want a healthy diet or subset of information being referenced. A few concerns … 1. Echo Chambers: Subreddits can become echo chambers due to the upvote and downvote system, reinforcing popular opinions and potentially burying dissenting ones. 2. Misinformation: While there is informative content, there is also a risk of misinformation spreading quickly, especially in less moderated subreddits. 3. Privacy Concerns: Despite anonymity, privacy can still be a concern if users are not careful with the information they share. 4. Negative Community Interactions: Some communities may foster negative behaviors, such as trolling, harassment, or toxic discussions, which can detract from the user experience. It’ll be interesting to see how OpenAI mitigates these risks and how this impacts #publishers.

Reddit shares surged 11% in extended trading on Thursday after the social media company announced a partnership with OpenAI that will allow the ChatGPT-maker to train its artificial intelligence models on Reddit content. As part of the deal, OpenAI will gain access to Reddit’s Data application programming interface (API), “which provides real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit,” according to a release. In exchange, Reddit will begin offering certain AI features to users and moderators, powered by OpenAI, which will also become a Reddit advertising partner. Google announced a similar partnership with Reddit in February, allowing the company to train its AI models, such as Gemini, on Reddit content via access to the platform’s API. (CNBC)

I'll admit that I've become one of those people who have become so disappointed in Google search results that I append the term “reddit” to the end of most of my queries. Rather than scouring the vast information pool crawled by Google's bots, I seek insights and links from the Reddit universe, which covers a remarkably broad range of topics. I'm not alone in this sentiment. Reddit has surpassed the likes of Google and Instagram in The Visibility Index, getting over 338 million clicks per month. The question "Is Reddit a better search engine than Google?" has been frequently asked in recent years. Now, OpenAI might have just created a new search king, potentially driving another nail into Google's coffin.

Reddit, Inc. is already a dying social media company that has eradicated trust and shown they care more about monetization than hosting open communication. This move by OpenAI seems to be a blunder. Who was asking for better Reddit searchability through Chat? I bet almost no one. You can Google search Reddit just fine. Furthermore, Reddit is the #1 social media suffering from AI content. I guess let's have the BS peddler sort out what BS we want to see from the BS farm so we can revel in the dying parts of the internet. Overall, this somewhat reduces my trust in OpenAI rather than expand upon it and greatly reduces my trust in Reddit.
