🏆 Chess Showdown: World Championship Final & My Correspondence Battle! Today, chess history was made in the World Chess Championship final, showcasing determination, preparation, and precise calculation at the highest level. As I followed the final moves with excitement, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own recently completed game in the Rest of World Championship 2024 Semi-Finals. Though not played under the same spotlight and far far away from this level, my game against International Master James R. Ellis felt like my own world championship moment. After weeks of calculation and analysis, the game ended in a hard-fought draw—a result I’m proud of, considering my opponent’s rating is 213 ELO points above mine. Key Takeaways: Opening Dynamics: A sharp English Opening with early aggression. Middlegame Battle: Creative play on both sides, pushing the limits of the position. Endgame Precision: Precise calculations led to a well-deserved draw. 💡 Read the Full Game Analysis: https://lnkd.in/gdPJgqP5 What’s your most memorable chess battle? Chess is getting boring, Maybe for one Magnus Carlsen who declined to defend his title last year, allowing Nepo and Ding Liren to compete for his crown. But this is what happens when you are the strongest player around, and everyone either adopts a cautious 'low block' or like Nepo, is good in spurts but cannot stop making blunders. MC said that Ding and Gukesh are bad at time management. Check. MC said that Ding would have the first opportunity to gain the initiative. Check. But no one gave Ding a chance to win this game. I know everyone is dissing on the World Champ - and not without justification, Ding has not won a classical chess game in 100 games. As a world champion. His form was so bad that India felt that Gukesh had won; and all Ding had in his defence was the phrase 'Form is temporary, quality is permanent.' And it seemed to be going Gukesh's way as early as move 7, when Ding playing as Black, blanked out for 22 minutes. He forgot the moves, and had to try for a line he thought he did not know well, but probably Gukesh was less prepared in. And when Gukesh uncorked the new move 10. g4!, Ding replied with 10. .... Qa5 !?. Gukesh had built a large wall of pawns to dominate 2/3 of the board. And Ding played to find chinks in the wall to get into the position. From Move 18, both players had to play chess a minute per move; but Ding played in Beast mode, smashing out top moves in seconds. Gukesh ran short on time, with more time, he could have found better moves. 18... Nb2; 20. ... Qc4, 21. ... Qd3 and after 22.... Bg5! , Black had managed to get his forces behind the wall without breaking the wall. And with the slight chance at 27. ...fxe6? which Gukesh took advantage of but decided against 30. Bc5 which might have been a bad but playable position; he played 30. Qc2? and got a worse position. And lost. This has been an interesting game. There were few mutual inaccuracies that marred Nepo vs Ding the last time around. Here Ding allowed Gukesh to build a large but brittle pawn storm, played for a gap, got it, infiltrated with half his army - and played the entire game without touching his king rook. (it was a closed position so he did not need it, nor had he the time to bring it into play with the strategy he chose.)
