The Bacalar Lagoon, also known as the “Lake of Seven Colors,” is located in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Some fun facts: Color Variation: The lagoon is famous for its stunning shades of blue, ranging from turquoise to deep blue, caused by the varying depths and sandy bottom. Length: Bacalar Lagoon stretches approximately 42 kilometers (26 miles) long, making it one of the largest freshwater lakes in Mexico. Mayan History: The area has historical significance, with ancient Mayan settlements nearby. The lagoon was an important trade route for the Mayans. Freshwater: It is a freshwater lagoon, fed by underground rivers and cenotes, making it a unique ecosystem. Activities: Popular activities include kayaking, swimming, and paddleboarding, allowing visitors to explore its clear waters and stunning natural surroundings. In Hawaii, beach access is a public right, guaranteed by the state constitution. So what happens when a beach dries up? Waikiki could conceivably lose a substantial portion of its beaches in the near future. Obviously climate change and sea level rise are contributing factors. But development has changed the natural processes of erosion and replenishment, both through the building up of infrastructure and the draining out of the natural swamp land. The world might be sad to lose a treasured memory, a landmark of luxury and repose. What is luxury? Society tells us that true luxury comes from owning a designer bag in every color or driving the newest car does not ring true. To us, luxury is slowing down and spending time with loved ones in the forest. This is especially luxurious in old-growth forests. Old-growth forests are forests that contain trees that are at least 150 years old and have not been disrupted by human activity. They avoided logging and human development for one reason or another, resulting in diverse, beautiful ecosystems that are vital for the health of our planet. Old-growth forests can be found across the United States. Let’s take a peek at four of them:    The Lost 40 in the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota—The Lost 40 is 144 acres of land that were accidentally mapped as part of Coddington Lake when the area was first recorded in 1882. This mapping error meant that these 144 acres were not included in plans for logging and development—they hid in plain sight! This section of forest now contains trees over 350 years old and is home to many archeological and historical sites.    The Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia—This sprawling forest, named after the Chattahoochee River, is home to about 150 acres of old-growth forest, divided among 6 locations in the greater forest. These trees were saved from logging because of certain characteristics of the trees. Their knotty, gnarled trunks would produce warped and imperfect timber that was unsuitable for construction.     Adirondack State Park in New York—One of the best-known old-growth forests, Adirondack is also home to the highest concentration of old-growth forests. Roughly 100,000 acres of old-growth trees call Adirondack home. Some of these trees are over 400 years old! Nearly half of this park is considered “Forever Free,” with its protection being written into the New York State Constitution. Roughly 3 million acres (containing old-growth and younger forests) fall under this protection. The rest of the park is privately held and is used for homes, businesses, farms, and timberlands.     Tongass National Forest in Alaska—The largest national forest in the United States is home to significant sections of old-growth forest. Containing trees that are more than 800 years old, the old-growth stands within this forest are home to a wide range of species, including the nation’s largest population of Bald Eagles.
