Application of Rotary Encoders for manually configuring heart-lung machines The heart-lung machine carries blood from the upper-right chamber of the heart (the right atrium) to a special reservoir called an oxygenator. Inside the oxygenator, oxygen bubbles up through the blood and enters the red blood cells. This causes the blood to turn from dark (oxygen-poor) to bright red (oxygen-rich). Setting the pump speed of a heart-lung machine is a highly delicate process that must be made as simple, precise and reliable as possible. The rotary encoders while turning the rotary knob, the operator experience a defined rotational resistance, which facilitates the simple, comfortable and precise setting of the desired value. For safety reasons, the rotary encoder must also feature a fail-safe design. This is achieved by means of a redundant mechanism. This particular customer-specific solution based incorporates a twin design with deviating pulse values, which makes the device fail-safe. This ensures that the pumping rate of the heart-lung machine is maintained with extreme precision after having been set manually. The Laser Dust Sensor FS00201 detects particles of approximately 0.3 microns, such as indoor dust, pollen, microorganisms, dust mites and cigarette smoke, and measures the concentration of floating particles in a space of up to 10 microns.
