This week is my birthday week and in lieu of a traditional birthday fundraiser on Facebook, I want to request that you make a donation to your local PBS station. If you don’t know your station you can easily find it at pbs.org! It is a pivotal time in our American democracy and a pivotal time for media. Northwestern determined that there are 204 counties in the US that are currently news deserts, with no newspapers, local digital sites, public radio newsrooms, or ethnic publications. Another 228 counties have been identified as having substantial risk of becoming news deserts. Many, many more have only one weekly source of local information. This means that these communities are receiving no or very little information on what is going on right at home in their community. And the news they are receiving comes from national outlets or those tied to major markets…not focusing on how our regional and national issues impact them directly. And the impact of this lack isn’t just seen locally. According to the Columbia Journalism Review, “local news collapse has likely led to lower voter turnout and bond ratings, and more corruption, waste, air pollution, and corporate crime.” The bright spot in this bleak outlook is public media. We are the ONLY source that is consistently available across the country, not just in major cities but in your local community. It is our very purpose to serve locally…to be a voice for each community and to tell local stories. But public media can’t do it without the support of those very communities. So please, consider making a donation to support the future of information. I will leave you with an extremely powerful sentiment by the outgoing president of America’s Public Television Stations, Pat Butler: “We have reached a point where our divisions are so deep, our discourse so rancorous, our understanding of basic facts so contentious, and our very institutions of government so poorly understood, that our democracy itself seems endangered. No less an authority than the Father of Our Country warned in his Farewell Address of a destructive spirit of partisanship which, in his words, “agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection.” President Washington’s prescription for such civic ills was a well-informed citizenry. “Promote, then, as a matter of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge,” he wrote. “In proportion as the structure of government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.” That’s what we do. And we do it very well.” Thank you for reading 🤍

An interesting journalistic trend to watch is the battle happening between outlet owner/publishers and editorial staff around editorial endorsements and coverage in the final days of the election. Lots of outlets are breaking the long-held tradition of making endorsements driven by (arguably questionable) decisions made by the owner/publisher. Two examples from the last 48 hours: the Los Angeles Times (the editorial page editor and half the editorial board have resigned in protest) and the Washington Post (just today made a similar announcement, undercutting their "Democracy Dies in Darkness" brand message). If pitching over the next few weeks, keep this in mind - newsrooms are even more tense than usual, and internal politics will also be hitting a peak meaning journalists’ attention will be stretched. And, these tensions will last. TL;dr - Be kind. Be gracious (especially with follow-ups). Be strategic when pitching (and stick to hard, timely news). Buckle up, folks. Here we go. And, make that plan to vote at vote.org. 🗳️

Today, I'm reminded of the strength in our voices. Every election is more than a collective turnout—it's a mosaic of individual decisions, beliefs, and actions. Each one of us has the power to influence the future, both in ways that affect us immediately and in ways that ripple through generations. The history of voting is a story of people fighting for representation, for the right to be heard, and for the power to shape the direction of our communities, states, and country. We can look at history and know that so much of what we have today was built on the determination of voices that refused to be silenced. This year, let's remember that every single vote matters. Whether it's for local leaders, statewide measures, or national offices, casting a ballot is a personal commitment to the values we stand by and the future we envision. The impact of one voice can start a conversation, push for change, and, sometimes, tip the scales. If you haven’t yet, make your way to the polls. Be that one voice. 👥 Here’s to every vote, every voice, every step toward a brighter future.

In times of uncertainty, one thing remains constant: our community's generosity. Time and again, we’ve seen extraordinary things happen when we come together — whether by helping a neighbor or supporting organizations that enrich the place we call home. Today is #GivingTuesday, a global day of generosity, and the Fort Worth Report kindly asks for your support. We’re halfway to our Giving Tuesday goal of raising $5,000, and thanks to a TRIPLE match, your gift will go three times as far today! That means $25 becomes $75, and $250 grows to $750. Thank you for your past support, neighbor. Because of readers like you, we’re able to deliver the trusted, impactful journalism our community relies on. You’re not alone in what you value about local news. Recently, we analyzed the thoughtful reasons members like you have shared for supporting the Fort Worth Report. We found an almost even split among values like truth and transparency, hyperlocal focus, and the sense of connection our reporting fosters. These shared values remind us that today, our community is stronger than it was yesterday — and your support ensures it will be even stronger tomorrow. If you’re unable to give today, you can still help by sharing our mission with your friends and family through a Facebook fundraiser (such as this one) or a social post linking to our donation page. Your support today will make all the difference. With appreciation,
It’s GivingTuesday! ❤️ Every dollar you give today will be TRIPLED, fueling trusted local journalism that strengthens our community. Don’t miss this chance to make three times the impact! https://lnkd.in/ghXn-2iK

If anyone wonders what it is I do all day here's the latest media highlights. Bit of a bumper edition covering June and July as it's just been myself in the Press team whilst we recruit our fab new officer and assistant as the previous brilliant hardworking team flew the nest. Needless to say it's been a busy summer so far with the genny lecs, some horrific high-profile instances of VAWG (violence against women and girls) and launching our first ever Summer Appeal. https://lnkd.in/dE5g_63r Male violence sadly shows no sign of slowing down, and this month a report from NPCC & COP shared that 3,000 VAWG offences are recorded by police each day. This is the tip of the iceberg as many women don't report the crimes they have endured, for a myriad of complex reasons - mostly fears they won't be believed or taken seriously, or that nothing will be done anyway. If on reading about the prevalence of male violence you feel compelled to act please consider supporting Refuge's Summer Escape Appeal with a donation: https://lnkd.in/d47E_gf3 #VAWG #violenceagainstwomenandgirls #domesticabuse #survivor #Refuge #PR #Media #Comms #Charity #ThirdSector #CharityComms
