Dispatch from #COP16 Cali! EcoAgriculture Partners' senior manager of finance and policy, Juan C. Ramos, presented our finance innovations work at the #COP16Cali event, Operationalizing Landscape Approaches to Ensure We Are on Track With the Biodiversity Plan. There, speakers from the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), IUCN, CDP, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, and others explored how landscape approaches can be incorporated into national biodiversity planning and showcase initiatives that support integrated, 'whole of society' solutions. The robust conversation unearthed several key takeaways: 🌿 Landscape approaches help to achieve all the goals of the GBF - particularly target 3. Indigenous people’s and local communities’ engagement is key. The research coordinated by IPSI and IPBES has sustained this over time. 💵 🤝 Finance and the private sector need to be engaged intentionally and thoughtfully. The emerging work from CDP on reporting related to landscape initiative and the comments from Unilever connected to the Action Agenda on Regenerative Landscapes show us some pathways to engage. 🏞 There’s so much work ongoing to operationalize landscape approaches and fund them. The diversity of approaches from The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), IUCN, HAC for P&N, NBSAP Accelerator and 1000 Landscapes shows this. The strong support from the Japanese government and their biodiversity fund has helped sustain this. 💪🏾 🌐 There's still work to be done to unite more closely as a community of governments and organizations and mobilize this work at the required scale. #COP16Cali #landscapeapproaches #ThinkLandscape #Biodiversity #FinanceforBiodiversity

Curious to know what is going on at #COP16? Here is a report presented on October 24th, by Trellis Group, in Colombia. Key takeaways from The Trellis State of Biodiversity and Business report, which serves to establish a baseline from which we can follow how sustainability professionals and their companies further this work: - the global business community has begun to respond to the challenge. - one-quarter treat protecting nature and biodiversity as a high priority, compared to two-thirds that prioritize reducing greenhouse gas emissions. - half the companies based in Europe are taking significant actions, compared to only one-tenth of those based in North America. - four-fifths of respondents say the companies they work for are not doing enough to address nature and biodiversity. https://lnkd.in/eRnXWGU6 #innovation #practice #purpose #systemsthinking #leadership

Greetings from Cali! We have less than six years left to make peace with nature; #COP16Colombia in Cali is crucial for our common future. This is the first meeting of the UN Biodiversity Conference since the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was agreed upon, and parties will review the state of implementation of the GBF. United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is supporting the negotiations with a small team on the ground, which are focused on four topics: 🌲 Further developing the monitoring framework 🌴 Finalizing and operationalizing the multilateral mechanism for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of digital sequence information (DSI) 🌳 Address a new programme of work on Indigenous Peoples and local communities 🌵 Advancing resource mobilization, particularly for target #18 on the reform of environmentally harmful subsidies and target #19, which commits governments to mobilize $200 billion annually by 2030 target – but also linked to targets #14 and #15 aligning asset allocation with the goals & targets of the GBF Parties will also take stock of the announced national targets and commitments. Financial institutions' commitment has significantly grown from COP15 to COP16. At COP16, UNEP FI members from Latin America and other parts of the world have been very active in supporting COP16 and driving action within their organization to align with the goals and targets of the GBF. UNEP FI is supporting the whole-of-society approach and is participating in 80+ events and counting, culminating in the second-ever CBD Finance & Biodiversity Day on 28 October. Topics include – nature in the boardroom, ocean, freshwater, deforestation, role of indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants and local communities, tools (ENCORE), data, (state of nature) metrics (PBAF), plastic pollution, biodiversity credits, assessment and disclosure (TNFD, ISSB, GRI, CDP, capitals coalition, ESRS), nature-positive, nature positive insurance, sector action, alignment, engagement with real economy, and more. You can find us here: https://lnkd.in/eXV_bwkF and on UNEP-WCMC's excellent Guidebook app: https://lnkd.in/evGreq3h This is the people’s COP, with salsa dancing in the streets while the DJ speaks about the GBF goals and targets and is surrounded by wildlife—including an incredible diversity of birds. I hope this spirit continues at #COP29 in Baku, as nature and climate are two sides of the same coin, and #COP30 in Belem, also held in the Amazon basin. This is the first of a series of COP16-inspired posts for those joining me in Cali or those interested in the global negotiations. Here's a bitesize interview about CSRD compliance!
In 2025/6, under European Union requirements, corporates will need to start reporting on their biodiversity impacts, and publish defined biodiversity action plans, including KPIs and monitoring, in order to align with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. Here, Samuel Sinclair talks to Natalie Kenway about how companies are beginning to analyse their impact on biodiversity loss within their business and supply chains, and how this can massively vary from company to company. https://lnkd.in/eTenD-mV #CSRD #Biodiversity #Reporting

Biodiversity is a hot topic in the business world, and for good reason! The growing interest from colleagues and clients on farming-related issues is evidence that sustainability is evolving and businesses are taking notice. A recent publication by PwC Netherlands and VBDO highlighted the alarming decline in biodiversity and the urgent need for action. But here's the exciting part: businesses have the power to make a difference! By halting biodiversity loss and restoring nature, companies can contribute to a healthier planet and unlock new opportunities for growth. The document also emphasizes the need for tailored actions based on sectoral differences in biodiversity impact and dependency. The best part? There are already existing agreements, initiatives, and regulations that support and require companies to act on biodiversity. Reporting on biodiversity is also becoming increasingly crucial, with upcoming mandatory reporting requirements. If you're looking for guidance and inspiration to integrate biodiversity into your business practices, this document is a must-read! It showcases how industry leaders like Unilever and Albert Hein are going beyond words, engaging with farmer suppliers and taking concrete actions to incorporate sustainability into their operations. Let's prioritize biodiversity and the farmers that work so hard to protect it and create a sustainable future for all. https://lnkd.in/eFgfGZnS #BiodiversityMatters #Sustainability #BusinessForGood #farmdata

Writing this piece made me reflect on my rural upbringing and the rich biodiversity that surrounded me. I could tell the seasons of the year based on type of insects I would see such as grasshoppers and flying termites. These have become less common that many of my younger siblings and cousins don’t even know them. This is linked to the overall decline in biodiversity discussed in this spotlight. I suspect many of you have similar experiences. For instance, can you recall the last time you came across a frog? The concept of biodiversity loss may seem abstract, but it significantly impacts our daily lives. As we observe Biological Diversity Day, let’s not only appreciate the diverse life forms on our planet but also understand the urgency of preserving them.
Today, Perpetua joins the global community in celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity. The objective of commemorating this day is to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme this year is "Be part of the Plan" and is a call to action for all stakeholders contribute to the restoration of biodiversity. This Spotlight piece by our Sustainability analyst Nomfundo Mdluli explains why this topic is important and how we aim to contribute to this in our investment process from an ESG perspective. For readers interested in a more detailed insight into this increasingly important theme, Perpetua’s 4th Annual Stewardship & Sustainability Report contains a long form article on biodiversity and how the loss of biological diversity is a risk for investors.

We’re delighted to celebrate #BiodiversityDay 🌎 with a major step forward in sustainability. Tetra Pak has released their groundbreaking ‘Approach to Nature’ Framework 🌿 This comprehensive strategy, developed collaboratively between Tetra Pak’s internal sustainability experts and our team at Biodiversify, outlines a clear path towards halting, and reversing nature loss while enhancing water security. Tetra Pak’s approach is rooted in measurable quantitative targets and practical actions. The focus is on the drivers of nature loss most relevant to their supply chain which has resulted in a targeted and impactful strategy. We would like to recognise the leadership of Anni Vuohelainen, Julian Fox, Martin Carlsson, and Gilles Tisserand from Tetra Pak 👏 Why is this a big deal? 🤔 Tetra Pak’s ‘Approach to Nature’ goes beyond simply identifying impacts and outlining actions. It dives deep, mapping the intricate connections between various departments and activities, ensuring a unified approach toward their central goal. Moving from Frameworks to Action 📄 While frameworks like TNFD, SBTN, and CSRD provide valuable guidance, they sometimes lack specifics on implementation. Tetra pak’s approach bridges this gap. They’ve meticulously analysed and integrated all available actions into a cohesive strategy, acknowledging the multifaceted nature of biodiversity. This ensures transparency - Tetra Pak’s ambitions and the roadmaps to achieving them are clearly defined. The Takeaway ⭐ Tetra Pak’s ‘Approach to Nature’ exemplifies how environmental frameworks translate into practical action when deeply integrated with a company’s unique context. This journey towards a #NaturePositive future involved both sustainability expertise and strong operational integration. We believe that companies that respect biodiversity in their operations and supply chain – along with managing their other material sustainability issues well - will be ultimately more resilient in the long term. We aim to make companies aware of the importance of preserving biodiversity and to encourage them to develop clear policies, goals and reporting. In the latest Sustainability in Action update we present several of our engagement cases focusing on this issue: https://lnkd.in/gyjTc2Us Capital at risk.
