OCS, it's interesting that a book I have been reading about success, stresses Admiral McRaven's famous advice. (If you want to change the world, make your bed). When I was working for OCS I began on a journey that continues. A journey of learning to better at cleaning, as part of pursuing success in work. "Cleaning" is not my middle name... I trust there are thousands of staff at OCS being inspired to change the world as they see the difference they make to assets they are assigned to. The book is The Alone Advantage, and the chapter I just reread was "Your Laundry Isn't Finished Yet" (pp 29-36).

When the pressure's on, your standards shouldn’t slip—in fact, they should rise. When we're in camp with England, it is very intense. You only have a very short time with the players and staff, particularly in the camp we have just had. One thing I’ve always valued highly, is our daily staff meetings. Intense? Yes. But they’re designed to keep us sharp and ensure we’re always aiming for world-class. Here’s our process: 1) What have we done in the last 24 hours? Did we get what we wanted to out of this period? 2) If yes, how can we make it even better, more challenging? 3) If no, why didn’t we? And what needs to change to make it world-class? It’s simple, but it’s powerful. Every person is challenged, myself included. There’s no hierarchy in that room—just a shared commitment to be the best we can be. We’re all accountable, and we all have the same goal: to win and represent our country with pride. In high-pressure situations, standards and the drive to improve should never dip. That's the difference between good, and the very best.

It took me nearly a decade in the home service trades space to discover a secret to consistent excellent performance… The first time I realized this was while service in a volunteer church service capacity… … I began to notice that during my once-a-week service, every time we served, we started with a 30-minute training, directing our thoughts and attention to the things that matter most, and how and why we performed our duties. This was a powerful lesson on me… … I saw how they took retired, sometimes crabby or forgetful, but good people and turn them into loving, efficient, and knowledgable staff, performing feats in a matter of weeks that would be a challenge for the smartest young minds. What was the lesson…? ….Consistent, deliberate training. When I first instituted weekly training, production doubled and sales doubled… Then later I found out from hiring a large competitor’s employee that they held not once, but twice weekly trainings for their production team… …That was when I understood. And we began to train every day. Production doubled again… And as we have increased the quality of our training, production improves and quality issues lower… Such a simple thing… not easy, but simple. I have found most solutions to issues are simple. Not easy, but simple consistent patterns.
