🚀 Venture Capital: The Most Exciting Asset Class?! Why? Because at the early stage, you’re not just investing in companies—you’re investing in visionary founders. It’s about more than just numbers; it’s about fueling the innovations of tomorrow and watching founders disrupt industries and create new markets. In addition, it's a powerful diversification tool within an asset allocation, providing access to high-growth opportunities. These were some insights we shared during an event we co-hosted with our friends from Privilège Ventures in Zug to showcase the unique aspects of venture capital and provide real insights into how Privilège and Spicehaus invest. Both firms are excited about partnering with founders to make a real impact. During the event, our impact was showcased by two portfolio company success stories: Drone Harmony (Spicehaus portfolio company) monitors power lines in California, reducing the risk of wildfires with cutting-edge drone technology. Distalmotion (Privilège portfolio company) revolutionizes robotic surgery, offering precision at a transparent and fair per-procedure cost - a game-changer in healthcare. "We have more VCs than startups in Poland" For the past 4 years, I’ve been learning about the venture capital financing system, and yesterday I had the opportunity to take part in a truly valuable and open discussion about the dysfunctions within this system. The best way to summarize the current situation came from a quote during the panel: “We have more VC funds in Poland than we have startups.” Why is this the case? Some possible reasons include: *️⃣ A young and immature market? *️⃣ Inadequate legal regulations? *️⃣ A lack of entrepreneurial spirit among young people? *️⃣ Fear of the low statistical chance of success? Or perhaps the issue lies within the VC system itself: *️⃣ A lack of understanding of the needs and operational style of startups? *️⃣ A reluctance to invest in new projects when real estate offers more security? *️⃣ An inefficient public funding system? One meeting won’t change the world, but identifying the problem is the first step toward change. Let’s keep pushing forward. It's that time again: The KPMG Venture Pulse Report for Q1'24 has been released, and here are our top insights that founders need to know…   📉 VC activity in Australia remains subdued, yet not too sluggish from 2018 - Q1 2024. In Q1 2024, Australian startups announced $70.3M capital raised across 66 deals, showing the lowest number of announced deals in 5 years.    🌍 Global VC investment has dropped to $75.9 billion across 7,520 deals in Q1'24, driven by ongoing concerns about geopolitical tensions, the lack of exits in the market, and a noticeable pullback in investment during the later stages.    🛡️ Given the rising global geopolitical tensions, interest in defense-focused technologies is growing, particularly in areas like drone technologies, satellite technologies, and tech-based software solutions.   🤖 Reviewing Q2'24, startups continue to attract VC investment in areas of AI and cleantech, with cybersecurity looking to steadily increase investment as corporates look to manage their AI-driven cyber risks.   Interested in learning more about the global VC trends? Internally, metrics help focus and inspire teams on a handful (or single) goal(s), and give license to defer the many daily distractions. Metrics set scale, which allow leads to deprioritize activities that can't drive enough scale or speed. Internal metrics can/should be totally different from the external marketing metrics.
