Last night at Reference Point library, designer and artist Ben Kelly joined Phil Manzanera—writer, record producer, and lead guitarist of Roxy Music—for an engaging hour-long conversation. From both sonic and visual perspectives, the two artists explored the synergy between art and music, the collaborative nature of creativity, and #RoxyMusic ’s enduring influence on culture and design. REFERENCE POINT is a library, bookshop, bar and cultural centre located within 180 Studios. Over three years it has become a home for emerging artists, designers, writers and creatives in London and hosts a regular schedule of events across disciplines, practices and ideas. REVERBERATIONS is a talk series hosted at Reference Point, expanding upon the world of The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition. Each talk will see an artist featured in REVERB in conversation with a creative from a different discipline to discuss art, music, and the relationship between the two. Visualflux is a Live Cinema performance by the a.cinema ensemble, based on the legacy of abstract cinema and visual-music pioneers, reinterpreting their poetic universes in terms of contemporary aesthetic and technical challenges. As in all fields of art, the 1960s were fertile years in abstract cinema creations, pointing to poetic and imagetic possibilities that fed the experimental imagination of the following decades. As a DJ, I am accustomed to performing under challenging conditions and kinda pressure (clubs can be chaotic sometimes) while ensuring timely and high-quality results. This principle also applies to my professional life, when dealing with challenging situations in a professional context. As a DJ, I regularly monitor the market to keep up with daily developments. I stay updated on who has released new tracks and where others have been booked. I also pay attention to who is playing the latest exciting styles and any advancements in equipment. This careful observation not only aids my work in music but also helps me track movements in the tech space effectively. As a DJ, I’m especially accustomed to hard work. Managing label correspondence, digging for tracks, organizing events, and staying focused even when everyone else is partying and turning night into day. This art of staying focused naturally helps me in hectic everyday situations and boosts my performance. So, if you prefer electronic music, let's chat.
