You may be recognizing how climate change is affecting recreation. This BBC article on the sad situation of coastal Scottish golf courses is a good example. Losing the historical and cultural value of these magnificent courses is one thing. Added to that is the impact on local economies. A comparable situation in Canada involves the rapid loss of the ski industry. Perhaps the continued loss of access to recreation will help increase public demand from our institutions to initiate real community climate action. #climatechange #climateadaptation #justtransition

Emissions from air travel and major football tournaments This paper explores the environmental impact of air travel during two international football tournaments – the Mens FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championships – by estimating CO2 emissions from the movements of competing teams. Specifically, was considered how travel associated with major international football tournaments has evolved over time. The findings are the first attempt to demonstrate the CO2 emissions from team travel to and within major football tournaments. Despite improvements in aeroplane fuel efficiency, the carbon footprint from team travel has generally not been reduced. The decision to expand these tournaments, locate matches across large geographic areas, and use co-host countries has exacerbated this issue. https://lnkd.in/dB4QVNW7

Climate Change: A Growing Challenge for Snow Sports The 2023/24 season saw the Ski International Federation (FIS) organizing an impressive 616 World Cup races across all disciplines, held at 166 venues worldwide. However, the effects of climate change were undeniable—26 races (4%) were cancelled due to weather-related issues. As our winters become less predictable, the impact on snow sports and the communities that depend on them is profound. #ClimateAction #WinterSports #Sustainability

Why is the Premier League still flying when they could be greening? A new campaign shines a harsh spotlight on Premier League clubs' carbon-guzzling habits. 🌍 Over 80% of clubs take flights averaging just 42 minutes! 🌍 The shortest flight? Just 27 minutes. 🌍 And most of these trips could be easily made by train or coach, which are greener options! Michael Solomon Williams from Campaign for Better Transport nails it: “Domestic flights are simply bad news for the planet.” Football has the power to lead in the fight against climate change. The creative campaign 'Black Boot' is determined to expose and shame the worst offenders into flying greener and smarter! Did you know that rail and coach options emit significantly less carbon? Football clubs, it's time to kick your flight habit and score green goals! 🌱⚽ Want to help push this green agenda? The R&A started the Golf Course 2030 process in 2018, asking #golf federations to consider their #sustainability strategies. Under pressure because of the consequences of climate change and more regulations for water and pesticide use, more and more federations are developing their sustainability vision. The latest one is the German Golf Federation Deutscher Golf Verband e.V. https://lnkd.in/d2hcEBaa
