On this episode of The Next Steps Show, we have the privilege of speaking with Legislator Virginia McIntyre, representing Monroe County’s District 4. Virginia opens up about her journey and the incredible influence her mother had on her path to becoming a legislator. We discuss the recent actions of the Republican conference, who stood firm against a proposed $1 million expenditure. Virginia sheds light on the process and what it means for the community. We also delve into the complex review of the extensive report on the ARPA funds theft and the vital questions that need answers to prevent future missteps. In a heartfelt segment, we explore the legislature’s united stance against anti-Semitism in response to a disturbing letter and cartoon, while also addressing the ongoing anti-Israel protests. Virginia speaks candidly about the differing views within the legislature and the importance of standing together against hate. Transparency in governance is crucial, and Virginia updates us on the unresolved $600k allocation by the county clerk, stressing the need for clear answers and accountability. As campaign season kicks into high gear, Virginia shares why community involvement and volunteering are so essential. She offers inspiring advice on how to take the next steps in civic engagement and leadership. We close with a powerful reminder that without leadership, people are often left to navigate life's challenges alone. Virginia encourages us to be that guiding light for others, to lead with purpose, and to stay connected. Be a leader. Share your story. In 1970, community members in New Hope, Minnesota, joined with faith-based partners to establish People Responding in Social Ministry (PRISM, Golden Valley MN) to help neighbors struggling with food insecurity. What began as a small shed of essentials in New Hope has grown into a resource serving a larger community area, stretching into Plymouth, Crystal, New Hope, Robbinsdale, and Golden Valley. PRISM’s mission is to provide social services and connections that empower people to build healthy, stable lives. Programs include the Marketplace Food Shelf, housing assistance, Shop for Change thrift store, and children’s programs offering birthday party supplies, a Holiday Toy Shoppe, and back-to-school items. As food insecurity rises, PRISM remains a crucial resource. Before the pandemic, 1 in 11 families faced hunger; today, it’s 1 in 6. Despite these challenges, PRISM treats every participant with dignity and compassion, providing vital services while honoring the resilience of the individuals they serve. What is happening with the rising trend in the United States in the past 12-18 months of self-absorbed, reckless behavior by citizens at large – either in the pursuit of notoriety, ignorance of socially acceptable conduct or exhibiting blatant disregard for community safety at large? Consider some of the following examples: • Vandalism at National Monuments: Yellowstone National Park (discoloration of the Morning Glory Pool due to trash and food waste), Gettysburg National Military Park (graffiti and carved defacing), Union Station Washington D.C. (protest graffiti), etc… • TikTok Challenges Leading to Property Destruction: In multiple cities, teenagers engaged in viral social media challenges involving vandalism, leading to widespread property damage in schools and businesses. These reckless actions left communities with costly repairs. • Fireworks at Crowded Concerts: Reckless individuals brought illegal fireworks to some large gatherings and concerts, endangering concertgoers' safety and leading to several injuries. • Influencers Engaging in Dangerous Stunts: Content creators performed dangerous pranks in public spaces, including jumping from high structures and engaging in risky physical confrontations for viral fame, putting bystanders and emergency services in jeopardy. • Airline Passenger Disruptions: Multiple incidents involved airline passengers exhibiting violent and selfish behavior, including attacking staff or other passengers mid-flight, resulting in emergency landings and delays • Rude and Violent Behavior in Retail Locations: Various documented (video footage) accounts of shoppers behaving in racist, socially-unacceptable and often physically harmful ways - out of a sense of entitlement and disregard for social norms. In The Four Loves (1960), C.S. Lewis outlines four types of love: Affection, Friendship, Eros, and Charity. "Charity" refers to a selfless love for others and a commitment to the greater good of society. However, today’s society seems to be moving away from this ideal. More often, people act selfishly, prioritizing personal beliefs and desires over the well-being of others. Public behavior is increasingly characterized by insults, danger, and oppression, often with the intent of harming or “canceling” those who hold different views. The rise of mobile phones and social media has amplified these behaviors, making it easier to document and share acts of disrespect and recklessness. This constant exposure is desensitizing the public, allowing offenders to act without accountability. Instead of coming together as a community, more people are building defensive barriers around themselves, acting solely in their own interests and ignoring the consequences their actions have on others. When did we go from "Looking Out for EACH OTHER" (a protective sense of community),...to "LOOKING OUT for Each Other" (a willful targeting of hatred, ignorance and cancellation)??
