I'm excited about this! Will HMI Asheville repeat as our Branch Leader in this second health challenge? Let's talk about strategy: 1- To make sure all your steps or mileage is counted, you'll want to keep your phone (or smartwatch) on you whenever you're up and moving. Even quick trips to the bathroom can really add up! 2- Spread out your walking bouts throughout the day. It takes about 2 hours to walk 12k steps, which is a lot to try and get in after work. Try a 15 min morning walk, 30 min evening walk, and lots of moving around throughout the day. 3- Know thyself. If you normally walk 2k steps per day, use this challenge to see if you can bump it to 5-6k per day (half of Mt. Mitchell). Aim for progress, not perfection.
Today, we are starting a week-long competition called the Walking Mt. Mitchell Challenge with the help of our friends Movement Rx This is Part 2 of our year-long branch competition focused on "Health." This is a 5-day journey that will take everyone who participates to a new level of whole-body health and a full-body feeling of WELLNESS. The ask is to keep track of your steps OR your mileage and record, aiming to summit Mt Mitchell (11,827 steps or 5.6 miles) as many times as you can by the end of the week. Note: You don't HAVE TO CLIMB MT MITCHELL! But if you want to do it - that's great! Also, as part of the competition, each day's log is capped at 6 miles (or 12,672 steps)- so your consistent participation throughout the week is more important than any day! HMI Asheville won our first challenge - will they defend, or will another branch step up?

Hooray! The 2024 ASCHB conference is now open for booking! It’s been SUCH a privilege to bring together another amazing group of speakers from a myriad of backgrounds to take a thought-provoking new look at another critical and timely topic. (What a lot of adjectives, but it's true). And this year the subject is HEALTHCARE… specifically, what history has to contribute to understanding the intricate links between our health and the built environment around us. As with so many aspects of our lives, healthcare changed radically as a result of the Industrial Revolution and The Enlightenment. Some changes were of immense value, but others had unfortunate consequences. Our speakers will be turning the microscope onto topics such as thermal physiology, and the impacts of science and fashion on hospitals and other healthcare settings. We will be asking: what are we doing right, and where have we gone off the rails? How can we extract the best ideas from the whole history of healthcare in the built environment, to construct a better and healthier future? I’ll post a complete timetable for the day very soon, but just to whet your appetite our guests include Jelena Bekvalec of the Museum of London on what we really know about the health of people in the past, Clare Hickman on mental health care and gardens, and 2021 Gus Astley Award winner India Wright on spas; plus a series of dives into current practice (including St Barts Hospital, Finsbury Health Centre, and the Maggie Centres); and I'm thrilled to be able to tell you that the inimitable Professor Alan Short will be giving our Endnote. Note this isn’t a virtual conference, where you listen with half an ear while getting on with other chores: it’s very much a live event. And ASCHB conferences always do provide the most exhilarating sort of immersive experience… as you will know if you've ever attended one of our conferences, the coffee breaks and lunch will inevitably be buzzing with animated conversations, which will culminate in an eye-opening plenary at the end of the day. In ASCHB plenaries, speakers and audience engage together to discuss how to take new ways of thinking from the day, and into solutions for the problems currently besetting us. So, whether you are a healthcare or building professional or just an interested amateur, do book now, and join us at the Glazier’s Hall on 18th April! We can safely promise that you will emerge with new ideas about the role of history and conservation in the future of healthcare. You can find a flyer and booking form on the ASCHB website (https://lnkd.in/eYAFVfmk), or you can book directly through Eventbrite at https://lnkd.in/e6a7qgwz (note that Eventbrite do levy a charge).

Network Greener (networkgreener.com) is a new tool that Green Health Lab at UCSF has created to address the impact of medical conference travel on the climate crisis. While the healthcare system overall contributes to carbon emissions, travel to medical conferences can also contribute to a healthcare leaders' total carbon footprint. Therefore, the team has launched a carbon emissions calculator to raise awareness about the environmental impact of academic conferences. This exciting new tool will allow attendees and conference organizers to estimate their carbon emissions from either attending or hosting a conference in-person or virtually and learn about the many ways one can offset their carbon emissions from these events. Network Greener aims to serve as an advocacy platform to promote virtual attendance at such events to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make conferences more accessible. We want to inspire conversations on how we can be accountable as highly regarded leaders in society to mitigate our carbon footprint for the health of not only our planet but also our patients. https://lnkd.in/gRqhtFnp
