Building good public transit, pedestrian throughways and connected spaces are only as useful to us as the culture is strong. While designing spaces that help to improve the infrastructural aspects of our community, we should also engage in conversations that can help us stimulate the cultural characteristics of a place. This helps to: 1. Create a unique sense of place, residents can be proud of 2. Give examples and create excitement around how the space can continue to be used. 3. Develop stronger ties with the present community with their historical roots. All of which help to create stronger social bonds and a deeper sense of belonging.

On a recent community visit, I was asked to provide some thoughts on the condition of the downtown, it is my nature to be candid because what good does it do anyone to gloss over the truth? I explained that things aren’t great and that the current condition of the downtown made it hard to love, and this is a problem. The heart of the community should not be hard to love, it should be incredibly easy to fall for. We shouldn’t keep asking residents to do the extra work to see the diamond in the rough, we should extract the damn diamond. To soften the blow a bit, I mentioned that the downtown had plenty of potential and a woman in the group wisely told me to stop right there. She asked me please not to say the word potential, that potential is meaningless and all it does was give people a pass to stagnate. I had not really given this much thought before, but she was absolutely right and I am so thankful she pointed out what a terrible word potential is. If I said I have the potential to get in shape, you would laugh at me and rightfully so, because of course I have the potential to be healthier, everyone has the potential to do better, but we are choosing not to. The fact that I have the ability to do so matters not. Every single town has the potential to prettier, to be more resilient, to be stronger or more self-reliant. And? Potential isn’t some sort of badge of honor, it’s not an actual attribute. Great, a place could do better, or it could do worse, so what? I realized what a pejorative word potential is and how we should dismiss it from our vocabulary all together, but especially in the context of community revitalization. When someone says your town has potential, what they are really saying is, you aren’t living up to your promise. They are saying this can and should be better but for lack of effort. Potential is just another way to cultivate and justify apathy. It doesn’t matter in the least what your town could be, what matters is what your town actually is. What matters is the actions you are taking to improve. Every day you sit back and talk about the potential of your town is another day wasted not realizing it.

Follow Paul Kalbfleisch for some of the best thinking on modern city building!
Here’s a quick story for you today: My friend had just moved to a new city, let’s call it Newtown for the sake of this story. She was attending a free city-run event when she overheard a few attendees talking. One person described the event as “so Newtown” and the others quickly nodded in agreement. Having just moved, she didn’t know what about the event instantly made it familiar—but the locals did. They recognized the event as consistent with how their city engages with its citizens. In other words, how their city plays. And that’s my point. While I’ll be the first to admit that asking “How does your city play?” sounds vague, trust me when I say your citizens know, even if they can’t put it into words. #citybuilding #cityliving #placemaking #joyfulcities #joyexperiments

"El cor de Bellprat" (Final degree project). In this context, the constant migration to the cities has left a profound mark on the community life, a proposal emerges: the restoration of the corral, a symbolic structure that has been abandoned for years, converting it into a community center. The vision for this new community center includes creating an environment that fosters interaction between the natural surroundings and indoor spaces, allowing for activities both outdoors and indoors. From meals and drinks in company to board games, private meetings, presentations and talks, cooking sessions, and beverage service, the center will offer a wide variety of options that reflect the interests and needs of Bellprat’s residents. This space is characterized by its multifunctionality, changing its organization according to the needs of each season or even the events being organized. Additionally, it is envisioned that on special occasions such as the town festival or the book fair, the space will be sufficiently versatile to host larger-scale activities, such as talks, communal dinners, the traditional paella, theater performances, among others, thereby strengthening the town’s social and cultural relationships. The aim of this initiative is to provide the inhabitants of Bellprat with a meeting point that fosters communication, interaction, and above all, a sense of belonging and community. Through the restoration of the corral and its conversion into a community center, the goal is to reactivate the tightly-knit community life that has defined Bellprat over the years.
