Paper alert! In a new #review article, CDRmare experts Nadine Mengis and Andreas Oschlies (GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel), together with Katja Fennel, Lennart T. Bach, and Jean-Pierre Gattuso, summarise the current state of knowledge on the potentials, risks, side-effects, and challenges associated with technical feasibility, governance, monitoring, reporting and accounting of marine #CDR, covering a range of biotic and geochemical approaches. In particular, they discuss the extent to which a comparison with direct injection of CO2 into seawater, which was proposed decades ago and is now prohibited by international agreements, can provide guidance for evaluating some of the biotic approaches to marine CDR.
