Luton Borough Council’s planning committee has approved Luton Town Football Club's plans to build a 25,000-capacity stadium. Luton Town FC’s development company, 2020 Developments, submitted the application for the Power Court Stadium in September. The scheme is part of larger plans to instigate “major and long-lasting regeneration” for the town centre. The hybrid planning application includes details for the Power Court Stadium and also an updated outline submission for an adjacent hotel and music venue. The development sits within a wider 20-acre site owned by 2020 Developments, which in turn will involve new areas of high-quality public realm, 1,200 apartments and new commercial areas. The proposed change to the standard method kicks out some very interesting figures locally! North Warwickshire sees a whopping 133% increase, Stratford on Avon an equally whopping 99%, with Warwick DC a less whopping but still significant 65%. Rugby Borough’s requirement increases by 22%. These increases will have implications for emerging plans and the Green Belt. The new(ish) Northants authorities are looking at increases of 11% (North) and 22% (West), this must therefore influence the allocations in their respective emerging plans. Elsewhere: in Buckinghamshire the annual target increases by 42% - there is a call for sites consultation running until June next year and, in Cherwell, a 55% increase. From football club to community hub… My personal UKREiiF day one highlight came in the discussion of football clubs as drivers for urban regeneration. The upcoming construction of the 25,000 capacity New York City FC stadium at Millets Point, Queens, NYC offered a promising blueprint: - Publicly funded environmental remediation and infrastructure upgrades - Privately funded 100% affordable 2,500 home residential development - New 650-seat school - Significant open space provision - $750m privately funded world class football stadium On home soil, the opportunity to deliver wider public benefits from sports stadia development is no more evident than in the Everton Football Club relocation to Bramley Moore Dock, where CBRE UK Planning have led on the transformative dockside stadium development. Football clubs emerged from the communities in which they were embedded and this local connections remains vital as clubs seek to catalyse regeneration through the expansion, improvement, and diversification of their grounds. #UKREiiF #CBRE

STORY OF THE WEEK "A Bridge of Allan-based sports facilities management specialist has hammered home its ambition to break into the local authority sector in Scotland, after winning a series of major contracts with councils south of the Border." Sports and Leisure Management Group (SLM) is the largest subsidiary of Castle View Corporate Holdings and is now the biggest operator of local-authority-owned swimming pools. When speaking about the growing number of closures amongst local authority-run sports and recreational facilities: “It’s tragic at a time like this when the health of the nation [is under scrutiny] and the youth issues that we have got. We should be trying to preserve these assets for the communities.” Read full story in Herald... ▶️ https://buff.ly/42xpR9n

Football facilities in Cheshire are set for a boost following the publication of a Local Football Facility Plan for the region. The plan has been prepared with support from partners, including the The Premier League, The Football Association (FA) and the Football Foundation, Cheshire County FA, Active Partnerships, Sport England and Cheshire East Council. Every local authority in the country has its own Local Football Facility Plan, which identifies priority projects for potential investment from the Football Foundation – so that more and better facilities for grassroots football can be delivered. In Cheshire East, the plan identifies the need for 11 new 3G pitches and the refurbishment of three existing 3G pitches. Were Bristol City Women's FC in the Relegation Battle before even kicking the ball? Bristol City's journey in the Women's Super League echoes the financial hurdles many women's teams face. Being one of just two teams left in the WSL without the backing of a Premier League side – Leicester City are the other and they are an incomparable operation – they have had to be creative in their approach. With a tight budget, Bristol City's team "off-the-pitch" is half the size of the average WSL team, and a third of the size of the bigger clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea women. An abundance of injuries this season also meant the team utilised more academy players, fielding the youngest average line up in the division (24 years, 136 days). The obvious solution here would've been to add three players to their squad in the January transfer window, but could they even afford to? Women's teams with more money generated by their men's teams are excelling against those without. For me, this poses the obvious question - is this in the spirit of competition? But it's a tough question. Limited backing from Premier League and Championship sides in the men's fame would surely reduce the growth rate of the game and therefore enforcing regulations on this would have a negative effect. How do you suggest teams like Bristol City women tackle this problem? #wsl #womenssuperleague #womenschampionship #womensfootball #womenssoccer #bristolcitywomen #bristolcityfc
