2H field engineers successfully completed a third flexible riser and pipeline annulus testing campaign for Hess Exploration & Production Malaysia last month. As part of the project, positive pressure and vacuum testing on one brownfield and one greenfield flexible riser were conducted to establish the condition of the annulus and integrity of the polymeric outer sheath. Our Kuala Lumpur office has established itself as a local leader in annulus testing thanks to their specialist understanding of flexible pipe design and riser response and has been supporting flexible riser and pipeline integrity programmes for multiple operators in the region. #EngineeringExcellence #OffshoreEngineering

It produces gas in the Surat and Bowen Basins in Eastern Queensland, Australia. 𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: • In pipeline maintenance, “pigging” involves using pipeline inspection tools (pigs) to perform maintenance operations without stopping gas flow. • The pig is launched into the pipeline and pushed down until it reaches the receiving trap (the “pig catcher” or the “pig receiver”). 𝐏𝐢𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫: • The pig receiver is located at the end of the 420 km pipeline feeding the GLNG plant. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬: • Safely opening the receiver to unload the “pigs” was hindered by passing valves on both the 42″ main line and 24″ kicker line. 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: • Due to glycol treatment and low point drains, a liquid KO equipment were necessary in addition to the DBB-SAVER vacuum unit. 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: • The Valvetight DBB-SAVER was deployed in 2020 and will remain with GLNG throughout the pigging campaign until 2022. The Valvetight DBB-SAVER ensures efficient and safe opening of the pig receiver at the end of the 420 km pipeline. By mitigating leakage to the pig receiver, it allows unloading of the “pigs” without disrupting gas flow and thus preventing production losses. At the beginning of this month, Eni and Weatherford successfully deployed and tested the 9 5/8'' Non Umbilical Downhole Deployment Valve (NU DDV). It's the third application in the Mediterranean area, but a first time for a 9 5/8'' size installed into a casing tieback. Insiders normally name this technology in short as "Casing Valve". Eni and Weatherford worked on the development of this technology before Covid for subsea wells, removing the need for control lines and installing a new-generation system to operate the valve based on Radio Frequency technology. In the last years, we've worked side by side with our business units abroad to install such systems, aiming at reducing even further the blowout risk in challenging wells. During the last 12 months, as part of the final phase of our R&D project for system development, upgrade and deployment, I've been involved in the entire process for the 9 5/8'' NU DDV installation during well operations, going onboard the drilling rig for working procedures finalization, DDV installation into the well and its testing. The lessons learnt in the previous applications allowed us to develop an optimized testing procedure, once the valve is installed, capable of clearly interpreting the correct opening and closing of the valve. A success story, and still with a lot of improvements achievable to make this technology more and more effective. On a side note...the great thing about R&D is that you don't just stick around your desk in the office. Such projects for new technologies and initiatives give you the opportunity to integrate the "usual" office work with the possibility to perform activities on the field: what you get is nothing short but proper job satisfaction. #researchanddevelopment #onsite #subsea #welloperations #newtechnologies

TechnipFMC has secured two subsea contracts from Petrobras for Brazil's offshore pre-salt fields. The first contract, valued between $250 million and $500 million, involves designing, engineering, and manufacturing riser flexible pipes, along with associated services like packing and storage. The second contract, worth $75 million to $250 million, includes designing and manufacturing subsea production systems for the Atapu 2, Sepia 2, and Roncador projects. It also covers installation support, life-of-field services, and optional equipment. Both contracts emphasize local manufacturing and servicing in Brazil to support ongoing pre-salt developments. Jon Landes, President of Subsea at TechnipFMC, highlighted the company’s expertise in flexible pipe technology and its long-standing relationship with Petrobras, citing previous success in the Buzios fields. He emphasized TechnipFMC's nearly 70-year commitment to Brazil and its role in advancing Petrobras’s strategic goals. Both contracts will be recognized in TechnipFMC's third-quarter 2024 orders. Kemaman Supply Base (KSB) PETRONAS Carigali Gas Compressor Overhaul Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the PETRONAS Carigali warehouse for a two-day site visit focused on gas compressor overhauls for the upstream sector. During the visit, I followed the turbomachinery team and gained valuable insights into the entire gas compressor installation process, from initial setup to final assembly. Addressing a Low-Pressure Compressor Challenge The visit also provided a chance to gain into a specific technical issue. A Low-Pressure Compressor (LPC) was experiencing excessive vibration exceeding acceptable limits. Investigation revealed compressor fouling. Root Cause: Liquid Carryover in the Gas Stream Further analysis pointed to liquid carryover, the presence of liquid droplets or mist in the gas stream, as the root cause of the corrosion and major fouling. Liquid carryover can lead to a range of problems, including: Erosion and corrosion of compressor components Unsymmetrical loading and excessive vibration Surge (flow reversal) Degradation of compressor lubricant #oilandgas #upstream #compressors #maintenance
