It's official: I have a math book coming out in 2025. Story time: in 2019, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics - NCTM asked me to keynote as the Iris M. Carl Equity speaker, the first time a current classroom teacher would fill this slot. Rather than do a conventional talk about math, I decided to create a conversation within the organization about belonging and justice by using a math lens. I was grateful for the response to this talk, but even more grateful that I was able to step outside of the math silo and give a message that might resonate for everyone else who didn't feel like they "belonged" for any number of reasons. Thus, when I first conceptualized the book, I had a few options for how I wanted to see it in the world. In proposing this book, I wanted this book to be addressed to people who have questions about math, but didn't believe they could do the math. There was no need to wait. This would be the book that honored my work predecessors named and unnamed, who believed we could all do math because we believed in ourselves. This book is dedicated to the people who've always known math was important, but just needed a way into the work. This book is also dedicated to the students who, time and again, challenged me to explain things better until they felt included and that they belonged. This book is for the educators who want to be their student's favorite math teacher. We're all teachers now. #math #education #diversityequityinclusion #educolor #teaching
We're excited to share that award-winning author, speaker, and EduColor co-founder Jose Vilson’s newest professional book, "You Already Know: Teaching Students Math from The Knowledge Within,” is coming to Heinemann in 2025. More here: http://spr.ly/6046kfyLn
