It's GDC in San Francisco this week! I actually began attending (and speaking at) GDC in the early 90s when it was called the Computer Game Developers Conference. It was also in San Jose back then. Anyway, I figured it was about time someone wrote a guide to surviving GDC so here it is! 7 tips for surviving GDC: 1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. But not water! Many people believe that when they feel parched they should reach for the clear stuff. Don't do it! Most dehydration is actually due to lack of salt. Instead, try a handful of salty nuts at a hotel pub. You'll have to buy a drink but it's worth it to get the salt from the free snacks! Could prevent disaster. 2. Charge to the room! You can charge that pint to any room in the hotel your camped out at. It's sort of like the old 'leave a penny, take a penny' tray. Just pick a believable number and last name. Don't forget to tip! 3. Always make business commitments at the end of the long night out with some potential partners! Nothing says "I failed at GDC" like returning to the office (or virtual office) without any big deals landed. They don't have to make sense they just need to sound excellent when you say them out loud on Monday. 4. Caffeinate more than you feel you should. Ideally with coffee as the acid kills bad bacteria from the food near union square. The FDA says that you can safely consume about 9000 milligrams of caffeine per day. That's about 45 cups so have at it! When you feel your limit approaching, push past it and you will come out on the other side feeling awake and refreshed. 7. Skip the sleeping part. This conference is only 5 days long but you can make those 5 short days feel like 10 if you skip the sleeping parts! See tip 4 on how to make that work. Stick with these 9 tips and you will not only survive, but THRIVE at GDC.

🎟️ How Does BookMyShow Handle Seat Booking Challenges? (With Example) Imagine this scenario: You and your friend both open BookMyShow at the same time to book tickets for a popular movie. You both see Seat A1 as available and try to book it simultaneously. Without proper handling, both of you could get confirmation for the same seat, leading to confusion at the theater. Here’s how BookMyShow prevents this: 1. Temporary Seat Locking When you select Seat A1, the system locks it temporarily for 10 minutes, just for you. During this time: No one else can book that seat. If you don’t complete payment in 10 minutes, the seat is released for others to book. Example: You select Seat A1 at 10:00 AM. It’s locked for you until 10:10 AM. Your friend tries to book it at 10:05 AM but sees it as unavailable. If you fail to pay by 10:10 AM, the seat becomes available again. 2. Final Database Check When you proceed to payment, the system double-checks with the database to ensure the seat is still available. If someone else locked or booked it before you, your transaction is declined. Example: You confirm and pay for Seat A1 at 10:08 AM, making the booking final. If your friend tries to confirm Seat A1 after 10:08 AM, they’ll see it’s already booked. 3. Distributed Systems for Scalability With thousands of users booking across multiple servers, BookMyShow uses tools like Redis. These tools ensure that all servers are instantly updated whenever a seat is locked or booked. Example: You select Seat A1 on Server A at 10:00 AM. Redis updates all other servers (B, C, D) to show that Seat A1 is locked for you. Why It Works This system ensures that: Seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Users get real-time updates about seat availability. Double bookings are prevented, even during peak times. 💡 Takeaway: This is how BookMyShow guarantees a smooth and fair experience for everyone! ❓ Did you know that one of the most common meetup planning mistakes teams make is setting dates too early? Here's what usually happens: 1. Teams set a date for their meetup (poll the team to see when everyone an make it) 2. They start discussing budget, location, and goals 3. They conduct initial venue search 4. They realize their ideal venue and location don't fit their dates 5. They either compromise on venue/location or scramble to adjust dates ❌ This approach can lead to missed opportunities and unnecessary stress, not to mention time wasted. The correct way? ✅ Set your goals first, consider the high-level location aspects (like visa restrictions and flight distances), and establish a general budget. With these in place, you can then conduct your venue search and start discussing dates. This way, your decisions are informed by feasibility rather than date constraints. Outcome: happy team and your meetup goals reached. If you need help defining your process or conducting the initial venue search with insider info on availability, DM me!
