Our work with Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI) has shown us the power of independent scrutiny in driving real improvements in the effectiveness and value for money in the UK's aid spend. ICAI has launched a public consultation to shape its focus for the next four years. It wants to hear from people working in the aid sector and those with a strong interest in aid, about the topics you think should be high on its agenda. On the top of our list are: 1. The interaction between UK aid and FCDO diplomacy. 2. The evaluation and comparison of different delivery models. 3. The role of UK aid in promoting localisation. CALL FOR PAPERS - "Refugee Law and Forced Migration Studies: Debates, Interactions and Futures’’, 15th Anniversary Conference 2 - 4 June 2025 DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS: MONDAY 27 JANUARY 2025 The RLI Conference offers a dedicated annual forum internationally to share and debate the latest research and cutting-edge developments in refugee protection. This year’s dedicated conference theme – ‘Refugee Law and Forced Migration Studies’ – revisits these fields, their debates and the connections between them. The RLI was created in 2010 to promote research and collaboration on international refugee law. Since then, the refugee law field has expanded exponentially. But this field sits alongside, or within, a well-established field of forced migration studies with its own momentum and dynamics. Despite historical tensions between these fields, researchers and practitioners from a variety of disciplines have regularly sought innovative ways to develop and bridge them. The conference seeks to reignite this debate, highlighting new and important directions in these fields, unpacking opportunities for mutual learning and reflecting on the remaining tensions. If you missed our 3rd online panel discussion on sanctions against russia with Robin Brooks, Sergey Fursa, Isaac Levi, and Ulrich Schetter you can watch it back here: https://lnkd.in/d-7rsCyw Some highlights: Hear Robin Brooks's sanctions"dream scenario" with a.o. a $20 oil price cap where Europe shows it is "willing to do what it takes" and triggers “a financial crisis in russia” making them "sue for peace quickly” https://lnkd.in/dYxzfudV Hear Sergey Fursa: “Until the Western world will have an idea how to stop this cash flow from India and China to russia, they will have the ability to continue the war.” https://lnkd.in/d582Mv2k Hear Isaac Levi: "5% of EU’s gas consumption comes from russian LNG" but half of russia's LNG export earnings are from the EU. "Something needs to be done on that". https://lnkd.in/dYrd-nSF Hear Ulrich Schetter explain how research suggests that one can really get "a big bang" out of squeezing all of russia's supplies of certain products, highlighting just how much trade diversions undermine the effectiveness of sanctions. https://lnkd.in/dybraRYC The panel was organized by our German-Ukrainian NGO "Freundschaft kennt keine Grenzen e.V." James Elder, UNICEF spokesperson from Gaza: “The scenes in this hospital, the the the screams again, the children with wounds of war on the floor. This could be day one of this war and yet we are almost at day 250. So much suffering is being inflicted upon Gaza. The intentions must now surely be clear that the absolute devastation of Gaza, indeed it's already happened. Homes, hospitals, schools, universities, agriculture, the economy devastated, and still the bombs fall. But the many, many thousands of killed children is ample evidence of what UNICEF deemed months ago to be a war on children… What they need? It's a ceasefire.“ https://lnkd.in/gKfFC7qG UNICEF: "More than 25% of children under 5 years are suffering severe hunger" https://lnkd.in/gcNDAu66 Latest poll in Israel: "39% of Israelis say Israel’s military response against Hamas in Gaza has been about right, while 34% say it has not gone far enough and 19% think it has gone too far... Israeli Arabs are much more likely than Jews to say the country’s military response has gone too far (74% vs. 4%)." https://lnkd.in/gvqqqcVp #Gaza

I’m often asked about the blueprint for our efforts in social media diplomacy, social media harm reduction and social media first aid. My response is always the same, we are creating it in real-time, forging a path as we go. You are joining us in our 15th year, a significant milestone that reflects our dedication and progress. The coalitions we build today are crucial. These alliances will set the global framework for what social media diplomats will do for the greater good of social media users everywhere. Our goal is to ensure that these efforts are independent of the influences and interests of big tech corporations. We are advocating for a system where the well-being of the user is the primary focus, not the profit margins of large companies. At the same time, we are working in good faith to engage these tech giants. We hope to gain their support for Social Media Harm Reduction initiatives and the multinational program SocialMediaFirstAid.org. Our vision is for SocialMediaFirstAid.org to become a multi- national standard, a go-to resource for addressing and mitigating the negative experiences and crises that users encounter on social media platforms. This dual approach, building independent frameworks while seeking support from big tech—reflects our comprehensive strategy. We are committed to creating a safer, more supportive online environment through collaboration, innovation, and unwavering dedication to the greater good.

Watching Winston Churchill in the movie - Darkest Hour - reminded me of his thoughts on diplomacy. Diplomacy gets a bad rap. You call someone diplomatic and there is this expression that reads - Is that a compliment or....? 🤔 But really, the true value of diplomacy lies in how we use it —either manipulatively or as a means to avoid ruining relationships. Here are 5 work scenarios where a diplomatic approach can help: ⏳ Looming Deadlines ➡️ You notice a teammate is falling behind on a crucial task. Instead of saying, "You’re late on this task," try, "I see the deadline is approaching. Do you need help to get it done?" 💬 Team Discussions ➡️ A colleague consistently interrupts during meetings. Rather than, "You keep interrupting!" try, "Let’s make sure everyone has a chance to share their ideas. I'd love to hear from you too." ⚖️ Addressing Conflicts ➡️ Team members have different opinions & the conversation gets heated. Instead of saying, "You’re wrong," try, "I understand your viewpoint. Let’s explore both sides to find common ground." 📄 Providing Feedback ➡️ A coworker’s report is not up to standard. Rather than saying, "Your report is full of errors," try "I think we can make this report better. Can you have a look at it again, especially points X, Y, and Z?" 🗣️ Encouraging Participation ➡️ Some team members are quiet during discussions, almost always. Instead of pointing out their silence, you could say, "I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this. The more input, the better." Beware diplomacy can border on sarcasm or insincerity & that can be even more damaging. Be genuine, straightforward but polite and watch your tone. P.S.: A good watch - Darkest Hour!
