Elaine Cooper, Writer at eleganthomenews I recently had a delightful chat with my friend Alex about how they transformed their orangery into a functional and welcoming space by cleverly combining natural and artificial light. If you're like me, someone who loves the blend of nature with contemporary design, you'll want to hear this. Alex started by emphasising the importance of natural light as the foundation. They pointed out that an orangery, with its large windows and glass roofs, is a perfect candidate for harnessing the sun’s glow. The first step Alex took was to identify the direction of sunlight throughout the day. They observed how different times affected the brightness and warmth of the room. This simple exercise allowed them to make informed decisions about the placement of furniture and plants. ?? To maximise natural light, Alex used sheer, white curtains. These allowed sunlight to flood the orangery while also providing a soft, diffused glow, preventing any harsh shadows. They chose to paint the walls in a soft, neutral colour palette, which helped reflect light around the room, creating an even more airy atmosphere. But, as the sun begins to set, relying solely on natural light isn't practical. This is where Alex's creative use of artificial lighting came into play. They installed LED strip lights along the edges of the ceiling, which provided a subtle, ambient light that could be adjusted for different moods. These LEDs were chosen for their energy efficiency and longevity, ensuring the space remained eco-friendly without compromising on style. ?? For task lighting, Alex opted for adjustable desk lamps at their workstations. These lamps had dimmable features, allowing precise control over the intensity of light, which is perfect for those late-night projects or quiet reading sessions. Additionally, they placed floor lamps in the corners to create cosy nooks, perfect for relaxing with a cup of tea. Throughout our conversation, Alex highlighted the importance of layering light sources. By combining natural light with a variety of artificial options, they created a dynamic and multifunctional environment. This approach not only enhanced productivity but also maintained a serene and inviting atmosphere. In essence, Alex’s experience showed me that the key to optimal lighting in an orangery lies in balance. By thoughtfully blending natural light with a strategic mix of artificial lighting, you can create a space that is both practical and beautiful, perfectly suited for work and relaxation alike. ?

Clerkenwell design week 2024 not as sunny as recent years in fact it was rather soggy. However that didn’t stop this intrepid designer from venturing out to those hallowed streets of design in search of the new , the innovative , the timeless and all the inspiration that comes from interacting with others . Sustainability continues to be the hot topic but there are some new approaches to it such as thinking about the environmental impact throughout the design process rather than just at the end product . Sustainable products that reuse existing waste material and end of life products rather than new and processing them with renewable energy sources. Another prevalent theme around the show was colour and how they can impact how they make us feel. Alongside this ,the role of acoustics in environments to create spaces that are sensitive to the needs of our neurodivergent colleagues and how being overstimulated by sound can effect everyone. Oversized , squishy , squashy, comfy, womfy chairs are definitely the latest "must have product", to give your spaces that work from home ( in your bed or favourite arm chair ) in your pyjamas feel , with many manufacturers launching their version of the product around the show, the lillipad, the puffa chair, the snuggle sofa to name a few. While not to everyone's taste they do add an element of comfort and flexibility to workplace and the choices of place to work that reflects the desires of the post covid workforce that miss their home environment and want to invoke the feel of home away from home. CDW 2024 had everything you need to make a comfortable , inclusive and welcoming interior , that is worth leaving home for. I look forward to utilizing everything I have discovered at this years CDW in future designs . I often think about the question: 'What truly makes a space feel inviting and memorable?' At Archispace, we believe it’s more than just the design elements you see on the surface. Electric streetlights: humanity’s brightest idea—and its biggest headache. Poul Henningsen knew this a century ago while the rest of us were busy squinting under bad lighting. He figured out that glare, the unfiltered wrath of electric bulbs, wasn’t exactly doing anyone any favors. So, he crafted lights that didn’t blind us but instead made us look amazing. Visionary. Literally. But here’s the fun part—his designs weren’t about aesthetics alone. They were democratic. Back when people barely had electricity at home, his cozy, diffused glow on the streets was probably the closest anyone got to ambiance. That's right, the man made infrastructure feel like a Scandinavian design blog before blogs were a thing. The story of Henningsen’s lights isn’t just about design that works; it’s about design that evolves. In the 1960s, technology got bolder, and so did bulbs. Cue Henningsen: “Challenge accepted!” Well, maybe not in those words, but his team revisited public lighting to make sure brighter didn’t mean blinding. (Side note: someone please fax this concept to whoever makes modern LED headlights.) Then there’s Albertslund—a streetlight so humble and effective, it became an international urban décor statement. From Copenhagen to Miami Beach, these lamps show up like a hip friend who’s low-maintenance but always stylish. No fuss, just vibes. Fast forward to now, and we’ve fumbled the glow-up. LEDs are too white, too blue, and sometimes...purple? (Thanks, faulty streetlights, for the unintentional Halloween aesthetic.) Henningsen’s lesson of balancing form and function feels more relevant than ever, but we’ve somehow missed the memo. Maybe it’s time to revisit the softer side of urban lighting. I ask my students always to consider how their projects feel at ground-level. The fabric of a city is the stitching together of the spaces we design plus the spaces adjacent which means we influence them either by design or by default, so why not do it by design?
