Still soaking up the knowledge from the AIR Forum 2024 in Denver, Colorado! Yesterday, I had the privilege of listening to a presentation by Prof Les Labuschagne, based on the best paper from the SAAIR 2023 conference. I missed it back home, but boy, was it worth the wait! It's clear why it was chosen as the best paper - it was a refreshing departure from the typical IR presentation. The key takeaways that resonated with me were: 1. Technology is easy, culture is difficult - we often focus on systems, neglecting the people aspect. Causal layered analysis is crucial. 2. Context matters - understanding the culture within our specific context is vital. 3. How do we change the culture? - a question that requires thoughtful consideration. 4. How do we measure success? - a crucial aspect often overlooked. 5. Experience matters - understanding the backgrounds and perspectives of those involved. 6. Perception informs culture - our individual perceptions shape our cultural landscape. Prof Labuschagne also emphasized why seemingly good strategies on paper often fail in reality if these factors are not considered. He highlighted the importance of incorporating qualitative methods to enrich the quantitative data analysis that IR practitioners typically excel at. By collaborating with other researchers within universities, we can explore ways to integrate qualitative insights, making our strategies more effective and contextually relevant. We invite you to join us for this exciting PDW at the #AoM2024! This PDW aims to bring communities together dedicated to creating impact (e.g., RRBM network, Desirable Futures scholars, Design Science scholars, GRONEN, OS4Future, PRME). The idea is to learn about their different perspectives and approaches; to build connections among them; and to inspire novel impactful (research) projects. To accomplish this goal, we have designed an interactive and engaging PDW with two parts. Part 1 will feature an interactive discussion panel with distinguished speakers representing the different communities. Each scholar will offer insights into their communities’ perspective and approach towards creating impact. Building on the valuable insights gained from Part 1, Part 2 will adopt an engaging ‘Market-of-Makers’ format. This energizing format aims to stimulate the creation of novel impactful (research) projects, to uncover shared interests, and to build connections among like-minded scholars.
