Good strategies are: 1. Short 2. Building Blocks 3. Cast a Postive Vision 4. Are Rooted in Truth 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 - As I analyzed winning strategies for companies, I noticed something they had in common. Most of them were short and could be summed up in 3-5 words. Domino's pizza's strategy in the 80's was "Handle the rush". Starbucks new strategy is "Premium coffee in a premium place". Strategies should be short so that all employees can grab onto them. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 - Your Go-to-market strategy should build on your product strategy. Your talent strategy should compliment marketing strategy. You have to have all the proverbial horses pulling together, or blocks building together. 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 - This is especially true for founders and solopreneurs, but also applies to mid-market. You have to live the life your business is creating for you. If success means selling in person 80% of the time, but you want to spend time with family - then don't build that business! Cast a positive vision for your life, then work backwards. Use it as a constraint for what you will build. For Mid-Market companies, talent recruitment is hard. Vision really matters when you only have so much salary and benefits to throw around. 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵- You have to look at the data. If there isn't a demonstrable market, no strategy is going to lead you to win. If the pieces of the puzzle don't fit, you can't force them. I once helped develop an elaborate strategy for rolling out a new product - until we found out that the sites we were going to roll out to ran different operating systems. The strategy was dead in the water, because all our calculations for ROI were based on one market, that was now broken into pieces. You have to look for truth and listen to it. If you get new data that negates your existing strategy, make a new strategy. What have you found most important in setting your strategy?
