The State Budget has been delivered, and while we’re disappointed that the focus remains on non-family based residential care, we see opportunities ahead. At The Reily Foundation, we believe in the power of early intervention, reunification, and Family Group Conferencing. Our programs have demonstrated positive outcomes for children, young people, and their families. Future Funding Needs: While the budget addresses many critical areas, there are still gaps that require attention. The Reily Foundation is committed to advocating for additional funding to support early intervention and child protection initiatives to ensure that every family has access to the resources they need. Our Next Steps: 1. Collaborate with new and existing partners to maximize the impact of the allocated budget. 2. Advocate for additional funding to bridge gaps in early intervention and child protection initiatives. 3. Work tirelessly to create a safer, nurturing environment for all families. It’s #FosterCareMonth. Again. 😬      Every year in May we have more evidence that Foster Care is NOT the best model to care for our children. Maya Angelou said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.” Why are we not doing better?     We have research. We have pilots. We have scientific studies. We have the voices of lived experts. We have success stories showing that co-design and prevention not only produce better outcomes but are more financially sustainable in the long run.     We now know that we indeed CAN UnSystem this broken system and transform the future of children in our nation. Together, we can not only prevent harm, but create much better outcomes.      As we wrap up #FosterCareMonth, let's center our conversations around co-designing the supports children and families need to stay safely together. All children love to play and well-designed playgrounds are places where everyone can belong.🤾♂️ 👨👨👧👦 Many inclusive playgrounds were created because of the advocacy of families and we continue to speak up for more accessible and inclusive play spaces for our children. ACD heard from over 130 children and families of children with disability about the type of play they enjoy and what's important when it comes to inclusive playgrounds. Our report, titled Something For All, brings together these insights. When it comes to foster care, this is literally the only innovation to the program that makes any sense. With violent and often mentally unstable youth ending up in foster care due to state legislation, this is the least the state can do. Let’s not wait until they are homeless and addicted to drugs or trafficked to support intervention services. If First 5 funds the Effective Parenting Initiative to offer early intervention to parents, let’s not sideline the importance of adopting intervention as a strategy!

💙 It's Kinship Caregiver Month, a time to honor those stepping in to care for children when they need it most! This year, the Annie E. Casey Foundation highlighted that over 50% of children in Arizona’s foster care system are in kinship placements, making AZ a top state for kinship care. Let's give our thanks to these caregivers and continue to push for policies that support their success. Key actions include reducing barriers to licensing, providing equitable financial support, and recognizing the needs of unlicensed caregivers.
