Internal Communications does not go on holiday! So, take a bit of time now to lay the groundwork to help you enjoy that well-earned time off: ✅ Review current comms plans and update as necessary ✅ Create and schedule comms that can be sent in your absence ✅ Promote employee communications and posts ✅Provide handover guidance to address management of unscheduled/ crisis comms ✅Finally, don’t be tempted to email while you are away – you may not be in possession of all the facts and may only add confusion rather than provide clarity #internalcommunications #internalcomms #employeeengagement #SME

"Three in four UK employees believe they are missing out on company news because of poor internal communications strategies, new research suggests." 😱 That is what an article from PRWEEK said back in the 4th quarter of 2022, where they analyzed a study done by Gallup. They also stated that workers want communication to be more engaging and personalized. We think this is still true today! What do you think? 🤔 Want to read more? Many a communications professional has seen an employee survey rating overall communications low. Generally, the leadership team comes back to the comms team to fix it. Here’s the question I like to ask: How did the employee define communications? Because the reality is, what they think is communications and what the company was trying to survey isn't always the same thing. I had the opportunity to speak to a group of supervisors one time who were complaining about communications. Come to find out, what they were really complaining about was how their manager/supervisor/direct leader communicates to them. When we started parsing out what they meant, it became easier to follow up with concrete actions with a specific target. Communications is not just the emails, town halls, talking points and magazines the corporate comms team puts out. It’s the conversation you have one-on-one with a colleague, or it’s the performance review you had with the absent supervisor who suddenly critiques everything you thought you were doing right. It’s the information shared, or sometimes more importantly, not shared. One leader mentioned that they try to limit what they share with their team because there’s so much going on. I asked them to reflect on a previous statement they had made about how they felt out of the loop because their boss was limiting what was shared with them. When I next saw this person, they mentioned that they stopped assuming what was and wasn’t important to their team and just gave all news as is. Sometimes our job is to reflect back where inconsistencies lie. Because maybe the survey results aren’t reflecting what you thought you were asking. Anyone else run into something similar? #EndOfWeekReflection

How Internal Communications Could Have Changed 'Unforgiven' 🤠 Just finished watching Unforgiven (1992) and couldn't help thinking how different this Western classic might have been with proper internal communications and engagement strategies in place... Little Bill Daggett's leadership style at Big Whiskey Sheriff's Department needed serious work. A robust internal communications framework could have prevented the entire crisis: ✍️ First off, clear policies and procedures around "customer feedback mechanisms" would have helped those cowboys handle the initial dispute at the brothel. Perhaps a simple suggestion box? 📊 Employee engagement surveys would have revealed deep-seated issues with Little Bill's heavy-handed management approach. His "beat them half to death" policy hardly aligns with modern workplace values. 🗣️ Regular town halls between law enforcement and the working women would have created dialogue channels, potentially avoiding the need for that bounty in the first place. 💭 As for Will Munny? Classic case of poor retirement communication. A well-structured alumni network could have kept him contentedly farming, rather than returning for one last job. The real villain? Poor stakeholder engagement. Even The Schofield Kid needed better onboarding. No wonder he left the industry after his first assignment. Thoughts? Would better internal comms have ruined this classic, or saved lives? #InternalComms #EmployeeEngagement #WildWestHR #MovieMusing #LeadershipLessons P.S. English Bob's departure could have been handled more professionally. Exit interviews exist for a reason! 🤠
