Yes indeed, actually a moment where those wanting to replicate the buckeneering experience of carbon markets are going to be sorely disappointed as the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits sets out its positions that there should be no international biodiversity offset markets, only regulated local to local offsets with policy driven demand, and no secondary trading which means no profit taking from flipping credits from one trader to another. Focus on the local whilst encouraging productivity and resilience enhancing restorative investments down global supply chains (insetting) and voluntary contributions markets which should be welcomed even if they do not easily scale. And yes, adherence to rights dependent transactions, price floors or other ways of ensuring fairer markets and a host of measures to drive equitable market participation, the features in the main desperately absent from carbon markets. This won’t please either those market actors wanting to make trading profits or those opposed to advancing any market based solutions in addressing our nature crisis … disappointing both ends of the spectrum is not a recipe for success and there are certainly many ways to address the crisis but it just may signal a sweet spot where practical action can be advanced. 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 There is increasing attention being given to refining, scaling up, and integrating the biodiversity and carbon credit markets worldwide. This has been a priority at international climate and biodiversity conferences in 2022 and 2023 and most recently at Davos in January 2024. Peace Parks Foundation’s Chief Financial officer, Colin Porteous recently attended the University of Lincoln’s Second Annual Conference on Nature-based Solutions using Carbon and Biodiversity Credit Funding in partnership with the Wildlife Trust.  At the summit he spoke at the plenary session, talking to the challenges and opportunities of the biodiversity credit market in Africa. Peace Parks is working towards a pilot project in Nyika National Park with rePlanetco, a for-purpose company, aiming to drive large scale nature restoration and protection through projects that generate significant carbon, biodiversity and social benefits. Nyika is a critical hydrological ecosystem that is rich in biodiversity and as such the ideal place to pilot such an innovative conservation finance model.  The conference brought together academics, financiers, corporates, and policymakers to identify opportunities for expanding high-value nature-based investments. This will enable public and private sector practitioners and policy makers to collaborate in accelerating the implementation of carbon and biodiversity credit schemes worldwide. - IAPB's proposal to ban secondary market trading in #biodiversity credits is very welcome, but still leaves many unaddressed concerns. - Local #offsetting is less worse than global offsetting, but is far from addressing comprehensively the lack of environmental integrity of biodiversity offsetting, the fact that it enables destruction to continue and possible increase, as well as the risks of landgrabbing in the global South; - Related questions: Are we talking like for like or like for better offsetting? Will the local markets be linked, and if so how? - Regulatory markets/policy driven demand would mean a greater role for offsetting in conservation policies ; it should remain voluntary. - Last but not least, the case has never been made to justify the alleged need for biodiversity markets in the first place; in fact, merely redirecting a fraction of the annual $6 trillion harmful implicit subsidies (world bank figure) would easily fil the stated annual funding gap of $200 bn (UN figure). #COP16 #Greenneolonialism

Last week, Expertise France and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH co-organized an event to discuss 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 and solutions to align capital flows to #KMGBF targets, especially 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝟏𝟗 (see link to the event summary in comment below). 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀 (𝗜𝗔𝗣𝗕) 🔎 Officially launched during #COP16 in Cali, Colombia, the IAPB international Framework for high integrity #biodiversity credits sets the stage for how these credits can function as a financing tool to drive essential private #investments in the conservation and restoration of Nature. 🌳 The International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits (IAPB) is an independent initiative established by the UK and France in June 2023 to facilitate the creation and growth of high integrity biodiversity credit markets and encourage enabling policy and regulatory mechanisms, in ways that are credible, timely, and coherent on an international level. 👥 The Panel and five Working Groups comprise more than 120 people from over 25 countries drawn from finance, business, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, NGOs and academia. IAPB has also worked with a group of Knowledge Partners including from leading scientific institutions. ➡️ And of course, Reforest'Action has been a part of it, as a discussion panel member. Reforest'Action was selected to showcase one of the pilot projects that bring the institutional framework to life through real-world examples. We notably presented our forest restoration project in China's Guizhou region and highlighted our comprehensive #impact management approach. During #COP16, on October 28 in Cali (Colombia), with the Ministers of Ecology from France and the United Kingdom in attendance, and under the co-chairmanship of Sylvie Goulard and Dame Amelia Fawcett DBE, CVO, co-presidents, Reforest'Action participated in the official launch of the #Framework. 🤝🏻 Together, we can create a world where #nature and #humanity coexist harmoniously. The #IAPB Framework is one (big) step towards this world. 

We are excited to inform our partners and wider network about an ongoing dialogue process focused on integrating a human rights-based approach (HRBA) into the core of biodiversity and climate action that Focali is supporting the organizing team via #Focalimember Stephen Woroniecki. In collaboration with partners such as UNDP, UNEP-WCMC, UNESCO, SwedBio, SGI and CDKN, we are guiding a series of workshops and a multi-actor dialogue seminar right before #COP16. These initiatives seek to enhance understanding, gaps and capacity-building around HRBA implementation in biodiversity and climate action, aligning with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework also known as The Biodiversity Plan as well as other international agreements.
