🌊 #CBDCOP16 Forging Coral Reef Resilience event taking place 15:00-16:15 COT, 28 October via global livestream! Convened by Colombia, Seychelles, Palau, New Zealand, France, alongside the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), the COP16 Forging Coral Reef Resilience event will bring together state leaders, private sector change-makers, and local coral guardians taking action to strengthen coral reef resilience in the face of escalating climate impacts. Have you heard of Small Island Developing States (SIDS)? 🏝️ SIDS face unique challenges to sustainable development due to geography, their limited resources, and heightened vulnerability to climate impacts. Despite stewarding rich biodiversity and vast marine ecosystems, SIDS often lack the resources and capacity for effective conservation and climate adaptation efforts. At #COP16 in Cali, Colombia, David Meyers, Executive Director of the Conservation Finance Alliance and a member of the CTCF technical team, moderated a panel exploring these challenges and discussing the potential establishment of a SIDS Conservation Trust Fund Community of Practice. Panelists delved into the design and operational strategies of trust funds that could effectively mobilise resources, build resilience, and drive long-term conservation outcomes in island nations. They also evaluated how collaborative funding models could enhance self-sufficiency and promote shared learning among SIDS, fostering resilience across regions.   Similarly, in the Coral Triangle, the Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, and Papua New Guinea—also classified as SIDS—face comparable constraints. Through a regional trust fund, the Coral Triangle Conservation Fund (CTCF) aims to support these nations, helping them reach their biodiversity and climate resilience goals by providing the sustainable financial backing crucial for impactful conservation efforts. Last week at #COP16, Legacy Landscapes Fund hosted an event addressing an essential aspect of conservation: the need to safeguard human rights. Conservation interventions, while vital for biodiversity, can have unintended impacts on communities, Indigenous peoples, and even rangers in the field.    As a dedicated funder of area-based conservation, LLF recognizes these challenges and is committed to addressing them through a comprehensive Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS). LLF’s ESMS framework actively identifies, avoids, and mitigates risks to support the rights of all stakeholders, including communities and ecosystems. At last week’s event, partner organizations shared their experiences with the ESMS, highlighting both opportunities and challenges in implementing robust safeguards.    We were joined by DLA Piper, a global law firm that has developed a web-based human rights due diligence tool. This platform will assist the conservation community in identifying and mitigating human rights risks using legal tech, data analytics, and AI. With resources tailored for nonprofits, rangers, Indigenous peoples, and local communities, the tool will support a rights-respecting approach to conservation worldwide.    Thank you to DLA Piper and our partners for joining us in fostering a culture that respects both nature and human rights. Loyzaga recently discussed strengthening collaboration to advance environmental conservation and climate action in Mindanao, yesterday, 30 September 2024. The meeting focused on establishing a Mindanao Climate Resilience Center and securing access to key climate finance mechanisms such as the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Adaptation Fund, and Green Climate Fund to support the Mindanao 2030 Agenda. This aligns with Agenda 7 on Ecological Integrity, which aims to safeguard natural resources, and Agenda 8 on Preparedness and Resiliency, which focuses on enhancing Mindanao’s capacity to adapt to climate change and mitigate disaster risks. #BagongPilipinas  #IntegratingMindanao

🌊 🏘️ ‘WILL WE BE ABLE TO CONTINUE LIVING BY THE SEA?’ As COP29 Azerbaijan on climate change opens in Baku, it is timely to re-consider the interactive role of the Ocean and climate in our everyday lives. 🏃♀️➡️ “The Ocean and coastal areas are changing much faster than previously due to climate change, and our approach to coastal planning is struggling to keep up. We need to both have insights into how climate change will affect the habitability of our coasts and have management plans that are adaptive to these ongoing changes..." 🌅 "...These plans should ensure that adaptations to climate change are appropriate and take a holistic approach to managing housing, food, fresh water and nature. Otherwise, we risk making our coastal towns unliveable”, says Katrin Schroeder, lead author of the chapter on Ocean and Climate in the recent publication #NavigatingTheFutureVI (#NFVI). 🧐 This flagship publication of the European Marine Board IVZW by leading European ocean scientists, calls attention to the fact that we do not yet sufficiently consider how climate-induced changes in the Ocean will impact how we live alongside it. The result is that development and management plans are not able to deal with these changes. ⁉️ Critical questions ⁉️ Written by a team of European #marine #science and #climate experts, Navigating the Future VI discusses the Ocean as part of the climate system, its critical role as a climate change mitigator, and the impacts that climate change is having on the #Ocean and #coasts. This document provides #governments, #policymakers and funders with robust, independent scientific #advice on future seas and Ocean research. The NFVI Ocean and Climate chapter highlights the need for better understanding of the links between the Ocean and climate. Yesterday was World Rewilding Day and today marks exactly 30 years since the world’s first intergovernmental treaty to address climate change was established - the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Since entering into force on 21 March 1994, the UNFCCC has provided the basis for international climate negotiations, including agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol (1997) and the Paris Agreement (2015). The Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) promises to evaluate how well Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are positioned to achieve the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over four days, world leaders will convene at the conference to forge a bold, new 10-year plan for SIDS. This action-oriented program will prioritise practical solutions to secure a sustainable and secure future for island nations, including the climate crisis, biodiversity and spiralling debt.
