Over the course of the last 30 years, having conducted over 5000 investigations, I have seen several common recurring causes that result in and contribute to plastic component failure. It seems that as an industry we keep making the same mistakes I have listed these in the graphic below. By avoiding these common issues, it is possible to produce plastic parts that have a superior chance to perform successfully. The best way to avoid plastic part failure is to understand the most common causes of failure. These six that I have listed, and all other failure causes, can be categorized into four key performance factors: · Product Design · Material · Manufacturing · Service conditions The first three, design, material, and manufacturing, culminate in the product. Then we put that product into service. Elements within the four factors determine whether our product is successful or a failure.
